Greg Johnson recognized as the Lone Star Conference offensive player of the week

Eastern New Mexico guard receives LSC offensive player of the week after 39-point performance, helping team to 2-0 week

RICHARDSON, Texas – Senior Greg Johnson is the Lone Star Conference offensive player of the week after scoring 22.5 points and dishing out 4.5 assists per game between two contests that saw Eastern New Mexico go 2-0.

"It feels good. I am blessed. I want to thank God for being in this position and blessing me with the strength because of the injury I went through this year," said Johnson when he heard about the accolade. "I want to give all thanks to God! I want to thank my teammates too because they got me in the right spots and they were able to drive and get downhill and kick the ball out for me to hit those three's. I want to thank Coach O (Brent Owen) for giving me the confidence to shoot the ball."

The Arkansas native shot the ball well over the weekend. He went 16-of-25 (64%) from the field, including 6-of-9 (66.7%) from behind the arc.

It isn't the first time Johnson has received a conference recognition as he was player of the week once in his junior season. This week's honor comes after a career-high 39 points versus Midwestern State. He sunk six trey's and guided ENMU to a season-best 108 points.

Johnson has missed two games in the 2023-24 season as he needed to recover from an injury. His performance against the Mustangs came in just his fourth game back and allowed him to play a career-best 35 minutes.

"Greg is a great person and a great basketball player. He worked really hard on his shot this offseason and it is paying off for him and for our team. He has been battling an injured finger on his shooting hand since the second game of the season and it's finally feeling healthy," said head coach Brent Owen on the guard. "Our coaching staff knew it was only a matter of time before he had a breakout game. There were several big performances this week from players around the league, but our team went 2-0 and that has a lot to do with getting recognized for these awards."

The Greyhounds are the only school in the LSC to have three weeks with the offensive player of the week. Johnson joins teammate Jahcoree Ealy (12/4, 12/11) with the accolade.

Eastern New Mexico will be back on the court at Greyhound Arena to take on Lubbock Christian at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 18.
