Eastern return to Portales, N.M. for a four-game series with the Javelinas

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball returns home for a four-game Lone Star Conference series with the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville this weekend. The series begins with a pair of games on Friday, Feb. 16, with games scheduled for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Then, the teams play a single contest on Saturday, Feb. 17, with the first pitch set at 2 p.m. Finally, the series finale will commence at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS 

ENMU (4-4, 4-4 LSC) comes back to Portales after its second series split of the season, during its last time out. The Greyhounds came away with two roads wins against Texas A&M International, in their first road series of 2024. TAMIU took the opener, 8-5, while the Greyhounds swept the doubleheader, 10-7 and 2-1. During the Greyhounds 10-7 victory, Beau Preston drove in four runs with three base hits, while Willie Ponce collected three hits and scored a pair of runs. Ruger Bravo dominated on the mound in ENMU's 2-1, tossing a complete game with six strikeouts. Daniel Pruitt drove in both runs, including a 7th inning home run. Texas A&M International snagged the series finale with a 7-4 against the Greyhounds.

Eastern sport a .267 batting average following the opening eight games, scoring 40 runs with 65 hits on the season. Additionally, ENMU has drawn 21 walks and grabbed 37 RBIs. On the mound, the Greyhounds have a 6.53 ERA giving up 65 hits and 48 runs. The pitching staff has 52 punchouts and one save this season.

Pruitt stands as the batting average leader for the Greyhounds, holding a .417 BA with 10 hits and eight RBIs. Ponce and Tucker Gideon also have 10 hits this season to lead the team, with Ponce scoring a team high eight runs. Preston made a big impact in the lineup with four RBIs and four walks (team high). Bravo paces the starters for ERA (3.60) and a team high 11 strikeouts. Luciano Terilli, Josaiah Estrella, and Julian Lopez each have a victory this season on the mound.

SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS

Texas A&M-Kingsville (3-6, 2-6 LSC) enters the game following a series with West Texas A&M. In that series, the Javelinas came away with the series opener (6-4) but fell in the remainder of the series (3-2, 4-3 10 Inn., and 11-1). During the win, the Javelinas only had four hits in the game, but a big seventh inning pushed TAMUK over edge to take game one.

The Javelina's have a .243 batting average in their opening nine games, picking up 62 hits with 35 RBIs, scoring 43 runs. Texas A&M-Kingsville are patient at the plate drawing 47 walks this season (2nd best in LSC), but also lead the conference in strikeouts with 81. The TAMUK pitching sports a 5.74 ERA during its opening two conference series and one non-conference game. The team has produced 68 strikeouts, while giving up 74 hits and 57 runs.

Vincent Sanchez and Michael Cervantes lead the Javelinas in the beginning phases of the season with a .333 batting average and nine hits each. Jacob Rosales and Kyle Perales provide a team best seven RBIs. Carter Poulson has been solid in their first two starts of the season, with a 2.0 ERA with 11 strikeouts and two no-decisions. Julius Rivas (1-0) leads the team in strikeouts with 12 in three relief appearances.
