INDIANAPOLIS – With one week left of the regular season in Division II men's basketball, Eastern New Mexico sits at the No. 6 hole in the south central regional rankings announced earlier this afternoon.
"We are excited to be in position to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament," said head coach
Brent Owen when he heard the news.
One student-athlete on the team has been in this position before.
Lyron Bennett played on a Pace squad that went on and earned a bid as a five-seed in the east region. The senior guard believes ENMU is similar to the program he was on just a year ago.
"I know that when I made it to the NCAA tournament, I had the same exact type of team," said Bennett when asked about his tournament experience. "We matchup well against anyone in the country. I am proud of our team and coaches for getting us into this position."
What stands in the way of ENMU and a berth into the regional are two games versus Western New Mexico and the 2024 Lone Star Conference tournament.
"These next two games are important," said Bennett when asked about the upcoming week. "We have to come in ready to play."
The Greyhounds sit in fourth place in league standings. ENMU will most likely play next week in Frisco, Texas in seeds 3-6. More information will be available when the bracket is released Saturday evening.
"Our focus remains on playing our best basketball against Western New Mexico this week," said Owen when asked about the NCAA regional recognition.
