Greyhound rodeo claims both reserve all-around champions at NMJC

Mackinzee Dermody and Jacob Walters highlight Eastern New Mexico rodeo's competition in Lovington

LOVINGTON, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico rodeo finished fourth on both the men's and women's sides this weekend at the New Mexico Junior College rodeo in Lovington.

"It went good," said head coach John Sharp when asked about the weekend. "We have to keep the momentum flowing with a quick turnaround this week."

A slight rain on Thursday kept conditions in the arena over the first day of competition a little tougher than the next two. Competitors from Thursday saw slower times and not too many who competed then ended up making it back to Saturday night.

The arena was massive and allowed cowboys and cowgirls ample space to compete in a great environment for collegiate rodeo.

Jacob Walters was named reserve all-around champion at the rodeo. Walters took third in the long round in tie down roping with a 10.4s time. He earned 40 points in that event. Walters split 5/6 in steer wrestling in the first round with a 5.7s time. He improved greatly in the finals with a 4.3s result to post second in the short go. He also took second in average and brought home 115 total points. Walters also competed well in team roping as he took fourth with a 7.7s time and followed that by winning the short go with a 6.5s result. He also split the average 1/2 with a 14.2s total for 145 points.

Mackinzee Dermody earned reserve all-around for the women. Dermody made it back in goat tying in the final spot with a 10.1s time. She split 1/2 in the short go with a 9.3s result. She added fifth in the average to total 75 points in the event. Dermody also made it back in breakaway with a 3.4s time splitting 3/4 to advance to Saturday night where she split 5/6 and posted sixth in the average to gain 60 total points. She was the only Greyhound to score points this weekend on the scoring team.

Orran Hart had a nice outing as he split 4/5 with a 5.6s result and added sixth in the short go with a 5.9s time. His 11/5s average was good for fifth. He completed the outing with 65 team points.

Shaeden Marr also competed in the short round in goat tying making it to Saturday night with a 10.3s time. Kassidy Lightfoot split 5/6 in the long round but did not have a qualified run in breakaway in the short go.

Eastern New Mexico will be back in competition October 30 – November 1 at the Texas Tech rodeo in Lubbock. More information can be found on www.goeasternathletics.com
