PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball is welcoming Highland High School grad, Jesus "Chuy" Licon to the Greyhound program for the 2025-26 season.
"Chuy (Jesus Licon) is a winner," said men's basketball head coach Daven Võ. "He played for one of the best high school coaches in the state, Justin Woody, and can flat out shoot the ball."
Licon is the third student-athlete to come to Eastern from Highland HS since 2022.
The newest Hound had an excellent high school career as he became the Hornet's leader in total points scored with more than 1700. He earned first team all-state honors twice (2024, 2025) and earned all-state honorable mention once (2023).
Licon helped Highland advance to the New Mexico state basketball tournament all three years he spent with the program.
As a sophomore, the team went 21-8 and finished first in their district. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament with an opening round victory over Pojoaque Valley led by 25 points from Licon. During that season, PrepHoops recognized the guard as the "Breakout Player of the Year."
In his junior campaign, Licon aided the team to a state championship and scored a whopping 900+ points during the season. He was also named the district player of the year and broke the record for most three pointers made (146) by a player in the metro area during the season.
As a senior, he helped the team earn a trip to the state championship game despite going into the tournament as the eight seed. Licon aided the Hornets to the biggest upset of the tournament as they took down top seeded St. Pius X. In the quarterfinal victory, he scored a game-high 35 points with five made three's.
