Eastern New Mexico men take ninth, women finish fifth at college rodeo

CANADIAN, Texas – Eastern New Mexico men's and women's rodeo competed at the Frank Phillips College rodeo this weekend. Two men and three women made it back to the short go for ENMU.

"It was great to be back competing as a team," said head coach John Sharp. "We want to use these rodeos as learning opportunities for our program. We had five make it back to the short round and aspire to have more competing not only for multiple runs, but also team points."

The men finished in ninth place and the women took fifth place in Canadian, Texas.

Jacob Walters led the way for the men's program this weekend. He teamed up with New Mexico Junior College's Teagan Roukema and the duo won the first go with a 6.6s time in team roping. They took fourth in the short round at 8.7s, which was good enough for them to take second in the average and earn 140 points.

Duncan Adamson made it back in steer wrestling and took ninth overall.

Goat tying was one of the better events for Eastern New Mexico this weekend. Shaeden Marr was fourth in the long round with a 7.7s time and finished atop the field in the short round with a 7.4s time. Marr snagged 140 points and was the only point scorer for the Hounds this weekend. Mackinzee Dermody was seventh in the long round at 8.1s in goat tying but did not come away with points as she took ninth overall in the field.

Ali Terry had another solid week in barrels. The second year Hound made it back with the seventh fastest time at 18.05s. She followed that with an 18.01s run in the short round to take fourth on Saturday night. Overall, she took sixth in the average for a grand total of 40 points.

Eastern New Mexico will take the next month to prepare for the final three rodeos of the fall semester. The next competition is slated for October 23-25 in Lovington, N.M. New Mexico Junior College will host the event, which will be the first of three rodeos that will take place in a four-week span to close out the first half of the collegiate season.
