RICHARDSON, Texas – For the second time this season,
Mo Austin is named a Lone Star Conference player of the week. This time, he was named defensive player of the week after a stout weekend that saw Eastern New Mexico men's basketball win a pair of games.
"The team really stayed together," noted
Mo Austin when asked about the weekend wins. "We had two big road wins. We knew we had to change something and bounce back after two losses."
Austin became just the sixth different Greyhound to earn seven steals in a single game. He did so in an 84-60 win over Midwestern State. Austin finished the evening with 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting and added four rebounds and two assists. The Pueblo, Colo. native made all of his shots inside the arc, and he was a major reason why the program won the turnover battle, 18-11.
One difference in the matchup against MSU was the ability for the Greyhound guards to work in unison.
Cooper Jackson joined Austin with a solid defensive effort. Jackson finished the game with five steals. Austin did credit all his teammates at the guard position. He mentioned that they "impact the game" and help the team achieve the ultimate goal of winning the game.
Eastern New Mexico continued an impressive week of play with a win over No. 5 Lubbock Christian. Austin had 11 points, five assists, four rebounds, and four steals against the Chaps. He helped the team force 16 LCU turnovers and earn 23 points off those efforts. In comparison, ENMU had just seven turnovers and the Chaps only had three points off those turnovers.
Overall, MSU and LCU shot a combined 50-of-109 (.459). Eastern New Mexico did an excellent job winning the battle in the paint as they dominated with a combined, 108-54, margin.
"Excellent on the basketball. Set the tone this week with defensive pressure," said head coach Daven Võ when asked about the guard play and Austin's weekly honor. "One guy getting a steal, means four guys are doing their job."
Mo Austin and the Greyhounds will play one game this week. They will host a rivalry matchup on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available.
