BSB Four Bases: (RV) St. Edward's

Eastern New Mexico baseball travels to Austin for first trip of the LSC slate

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico baseball (1-2) is set for the first road trip of the season as they head to face (RV) St. Edward's for a three-game series. Before the matchup, please take a look at the Four Bases Preview:

1.) Opening Day Dub: Eastern New Mexico baseball won their series opener against Texas A&M-Kingsville last week, 9-5. Greyhounds led the way with 11 hits in the first game of the season. Eastern had three multi-base hits in the matchup with two doubles credited to Adrien Martin. The difference in the game came off a three-run homerun from newcomer Jake Willerup who hit the bomb in the fourth inning. Logan Martin and Ryan Weaver were each credited with two singles. ENMU also limited TAMUK to scoring in four different innings.

2.) Highlights on the Mound: Nine different Greyhounds shared time on the mound over the three games last week. Eastern New Mexico saw Charlie Pierson and Cole Lancaster finish the weekend with earned run averages of 3.60 and five innings of work and picked up the win for ENMU. Micah Early looked consistent for a good portion of Sunday's matchup with TAMUK. He got eight of his first 10 batters faced out along with allowing two walks and also getting some help from a double play. However, he allowed a run in two consecutive innings to take a 9-3 deficit into the seventh. However, the seventh inning is where Texas A&M-Kingsville pressured Early on the mound and forced a pitching change for ENMU.

3.) Notes on the Greyhounds: Eastern New Mexico ranks fourth in the Lone Star Conference with a .963 fielding percentage. Cole Curtis is second in the conference in batting average (.571) and on-base percentage (.700). Logan Martin (.500) and Adrien Martin (.400) were the other Greyhounds to hit above the .400 mark this past weekend. Over the three games, 24 of the programs 29 hits came via single. Running the base paths proved successful for ENMU as they went 3-for-3 against the Javelinas. Cole Curtis, Ryan Weaver, and Grant Gilooly all had a steal in the series.

4.) Watch out Hilltoppers: St. Edward's enters the second week of play with a 2-1 record after taking a win in the last two games of the series against West Texas A&M. SEU comes into the second week of play ranked in the top three in the LSC in several key statistical categories. The Hilltoppers are second in the league in batting average (.327), double plays (3), doubles (7), hits (36), homeruns (7), and slugging percentage (.582). Both Connor Cox and Boston Lee lead the team with two homers each. Lee currently ranks third in the LSC with seven RBI's. SEU did well offensively for WT. They earned a 10-9 win on Saturday and completed the weekend with a 17-13 final on Sunday.
