PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball is taking a seven-game winning streak into Canyon, Texas for a rare Tuesday night matchup. Before the contest with West Texas A&M, please take a look at the Starting Five Preview:
1.) Aggies Go Down: ENMU swept the season series over Cameron with a 87-73 road win. Eastern led by eight at the half and continued rolling in the second half to secure the double digit margin victory. The Greyhounds were led by
Austin Abrams offensively who connected on 6-of-10 from the field. Abrams went 2-for-3 from beyond the perimeter and snagged four rebounds and three steals.
Mo Austin was one of five players in double figures for ENMU. The sophomore guard earned seven defensive rebounds and three assists while committing zero turnovers. Austin is third in the LSC in assist/turnover ratio. Cameron was held to just 26-for-60 (43.3%) from the floor. ENMU allowed Arzhonte Dallas to score 29 points off the bench going 5-of-7 from three point range.
2.) Back On Track: West Texas A&M can take a deep breath, but not for long. Their five-game losing streak is officially snapped as they earned two wins on their trip in the Sooner State. They beat Cameron (87-67) and held on for a win over Oklahoma Christian (91-87). WT was dominant in the first half over OC leading by as many as 23 points at one point and posting a 55-36 advantage over the opening 20 minutes of play. The Eagles got the game within single digits over the opening five minutes and took a one-possession lead (71-70) with 8:04 remaining. The Buffs got the lead back in near immediacy and held onto the four-point win. WT was led by Fontaine Williams who had 29 points in the win.
3.) Watch for Williams: In Eastern New Mexico's home win over West Texas A&M back on Jan. 22, one player was not on the floor for WT. Fontaine Williams has missed just one game this year – the matchup versus ENMU. West Texas A&M's leading scorer is averaging 20.5 points per game, which is mere four-tenths of point to earn the school record mark. Williams has scored in double digits in all, but one game in 2025-26. The only game in single digits came in their first matchup against Cameron when he had nine points. In the rematch with the Aggies he went for 22 points. The Wichita, Kan. native is the reigning LSC offensive player of the week. He is a former teammate of
Modibo Sanogo's while at Barton County Community College.
4.) Finding the Sixth: One noticeable aspect of the two wins for Eastern New Mexico came from the bench play. Against the Eagles,
Zaylan Chaney led the bench with eight points. Four different Greyhounds scored off the bench for the team in the win.
Mika Tangermann continues to provide strength down low for ENMU with the ability to shoot from behind the arc. He finished with five points against OC. Tangermann,
Kobe Smith, and
Alex Alfaro sunk a three-pointer for the Hounds. They are the reason why three of the team's six three-pointers came from bench support. The game against CU saw four Hounds score off the bench, including two players with season-high marks. Chaney scored in double figures with a dozen points for the first time in his Greyhound career. He went 5-for-7 in just 14 minutes of play. Alfaro had a season-best seven points going 3-for-4 and pulled down three rebounds.
5.) Road Warriors: For just the third time in program history and first time since 2003-04, ENMU men's basketball has won 10 true road games. The program is 10-0 in away contests and 2-0 in neutral site games. That puts the Greyhounds at 12-0 outside of Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena. ENMU's last road loss? A double overtime loss to West Texas A&M in 2025. Last road win in Canyon for Eastern? A 58-57 decision from Feb. 1, 2014. That accomplishment was made by the same team that last won 10 games away from Portales. Eastern New Mexico is 7-51 all-time against West Texas A&M when playing in Canyon.
