BSB Four Bases: Sul Ross State

Eastern New Mexico baseball hosts Sul Ross State for four-game series beginning on March 20

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico baseball is set for a four-game series against Sul Ross State beginning on March 20. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., but fans are asked to show up for a 2 p.m. tailgate with hot dogs and t-shirts given out while supplies last. Before the weekend gets rolling, please take a look at the Four Bases Preview:

First Base – Nationally Ranked Wins: After suffering a pair of losses to start out last week, Eastern New Mexico responded nicely by taking the final two games of the series to split the weekend over No. 17 UT Tyler. The wins mark the first ranked victories for Eastern this season. ENMU has now split two-straight series against the Patriots and the Hounds have split three consecutive series this season. ENMU won the nightcap of the Saturday doubleheader, 6-4, thanks to five early runs to begin the contest. On Sunday, Eastern trailed 3-0 early, but stayed patient throughout the contest and found ways to score big in the eighth and ninth frames to earn a 6-5 win.

Second Base – Sandy is Handy: Alexander Sanderson had two important outings on the mound for Eastern New Mexico. He closed out both wins and earned two saves. In the 6-4 win, he allowed one walk and had a strikeout in one inning of work. On Sunday, he closed out the game by throwing two innings and he allowed two runs alongside two walks and a hit. Most notably, he struck out three batters in the appearance. This season, he holds onto a 10.88 ERA with a 1-2 record over eight outings and three starts. Over 22.1 innings, he has posted 18 strikeouts and is limiting foes to a .300 average.

Third Base – At the Plate: Five different Greyhounds with a minimum of 75% of games played hold a .300 or better batting average. Eiji Sawamura leads the team with a .361 batting average. He has a team-best 35 hits and is second on the team with 20 runs. Cole Curtis is second on the team with a .341 batting average and sports three triples this year. Logan Martin has a .317 batting average and has appeared in 22 of the team's 26 games. Isaiah Figueroa sits with a .314 batting average and is tied for second on the Hounds with four doubles. Gabriel Watson has a .304 batting average and leads the program with a .467 slugging percentage.

Home – Scouting the Lobos: Sul Ross State comes into Portales with a 1-25 record and a 21-game losing skid. Their lone win came against Lubbock Christian on Feb. 7 with SRSU pulling out the 24-22 result. Only two Lobo hitters are averaging marks north of .300. Leo Salas leads the program with a .383 mark with 36 hits, ten doubles, and six homers. Max Wiggins holds a notable .322 average with 29 hits and a team-high 24 RBI's. Despite a 0-6 record, he holds a 9.00 ERA and has thrown two complete games. Lopez is limiting opponents to a .342 average. This season the team has scored 10+ runs in five different games.
