BIG SPRING, Texas – Eastern New Mexico women's rodeo picked up a third place finish at the Howard College rodeo this weekend. The men's team took fourth.
"We have to do it by committee," said head coach
John Sharp when reflecting on the teamwork from ENMU. "When someone has an off weekend, we have people on this team ready to step up."
Eastern dominated the top spots in tie down roping this weekend.
Cutter Pareo won the event after runs of 11.1s and 10.7s. His performance in the short go was first and helped him secure the win by nearly two seconds. His teammate
Jacob Walters had the second most points in the event with 130 total. Walters posted runs of 10.5s and 13.2s. He finished third in the average.
"Awesome," said Sharp when asked about the tie down performance. "Those guys work so hard."
Walters joined
Duncan Adamson in qualifying for the short round in steer wrestling. Walters took sixth in the long round and fifth in the short round to finish sixth overall. He posted times of 7.7s and 10.8s. Walters added 40 points for ENMU. Adamson did not score points between the two performances.
Walker Dennis made it to Saturday night along with his partner Caden Harrel from South Plains. They took third in the long go with an 8.0s time. They split 3/4 with another 8.0s run in the finals. The duo put up third in the average and finished the weekend with 115 points.
Shaeden Marr earned a trip to the short go in goat tying after a 9.6s time Thursday night. She split 1/2 with a 9.1s run and split 3/4 in the average. Marr scored 90 points overall to help boost the team score.
Harlee Barela made it to the short go for a second-straight rodeo. She split 1/2 in the first go with an impressive 15.69s run. Barela added 55 points for the team.
Walters won the all-around title by 10 points this weekend. He posted 240 points compared to the next closest contender who had 230 points. He was the only cowboy to score in three different events.
The men's team took fourth as they were 20 points behind the third place program, New Mexico Junior College with 440 points. The women's program earned third and were 35 points away from tying Odessa College who posted 180 points.
"We can't change what we're doing," commented Sharp on what is next. "We are going to go at them the same way."
Eastern New Mexico will be back in action April 16-18 at West Texas A&M. The rodeo will be hosted in Hereford, Texas.
