CANYON, TEXAS – Both the men's and women's Eastern New Mexico cross country teams finished first at the 2014 Buffalo Stampede hosted by West Texas A&M on Saturday morning at The Range. Senior
Kevin Roa (Salinas, Calif./North Monterey County HS) won the men's 8k race with a time for his first career individual title.
Roa crossed the line in a time of 26:03, his fastest time of the season. Senior
Justin Samaniego (Rubidoux, Calif./Riverside CC) placed sixth in 27:16 and was the only other Greyhound with a top 10 finish. Crossing the line with times of 27:58 and 28:01 was senior
Zerrick Vriseno (Belton, Texas/Belton HS) and sophomore
Casey Lozano (Anthem, Ariz./Glendale CC), respectively.
As a team, the Hounds scored 34 points which was 27 better than second place finishers Dine College and Oklahoma Christian. Texas-Permian Basin was fourth with 108 points and just four points ahead of Dallas Baptist.
Senior
Beth Blind (Kennedale, Texas/Kennedale HS) paced the Zias with a third place finish in the 6k run in a time of 23:02. Teammate and junior
Amber Saiz finished seven seconds behind her in fourth.
Also placing in the top 10 were senior
Sabrina Huelga (Lancaster, Calif./Paraclete HS) and junior
Klaudia Szych (Szczeun, Poland/Vineum Opohoksrtatigue) in seventh and ninth, respectively. Heulga crossed the finish line in 23:32 while Szych clocked in at 23:43.
The women scored 39 points in their team victory. The Patriots were second with 63 points and the host Lady Buffs were third with 66 points even with the first and second place runners.
Next up for the Eastern cross country teams are the Lone Star Conference Championships in Wichita Falls, Texas on Nov. 8.
