PORTALES, N.M. – Saturday could be a historic day for the Eastern New Mexico men's soccer team when they take on 23rd-ranked Midwestern State at 1 p.m. on ENMU Soccer Field. A win over the Mustangs would give the Greyhounds their first-ever season sweep in the series after winning in Wichita Falls, Texas for the first time on Monday.
ENMU goes into the game with a 6-5-3 record and are undefeated in their last seven games, tying the longest streak in program history that was set last year. MSU is 12-3-2 after defeat West Texas A&M on the road Thursday night 2-1.
While the Mustangs have dominated the all-time series between the teams with a 17-2-3 mark, the past five meetings have been evenly split with both teams winning once and tying three times.
Senior
Abayneh Crosby leads Eastern with four goals and 11 points while adding three assists. Both sophomore
Ryan McManus and freshman
Gil Munoz have found the back of the net thrice this year.
A team-high six assists, fifth most in a single-single season, has been credited to sophomore
Jose Hernandez. Along with Crosby, both junior
Carlos Viveros and freshman
Daniel Sanchez also have three assists on the year.
Freshman
James Gutierrez enters the contest with a 6-3-3 record. He sports a 0.94 GAA and the ninth-best save percentage in the nation at .833 while making 65 saves.
The Mustangs are third in both the NSCAA/Continental Tire and NCAA South Central Region rankings. On the road this season, MSU is 6-2-1 with loses to Fort Lewis and St. Edward's.
Andrew Power continues to pace the Mustangs with 12 goals and 25 points. Len Smith has found the back of the net eight times while Albert Rodriguez has scored five times. Leading the team with nine assists is Paul Sunderland. Ben Clarvis has been credited with eight assists as well. Michael Klodzinski and Rodriguez are the only other players with multiple assists this year with two each. Eight MSU athletes are credited with an assists.
Rodriguez leads the squad with 56 shots and has put 21 of them on goal. Power's 22 shots on goal paces the team while taking 41 attempts.
In goal, Nick Petolick has played all 1,598:17 minutes for MSU this season. He comes in with a 1.01 GAA and .700 save percentage while making 42 saves and allowing 18 goals.
