PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer team will look to defend their home field, going up against No. 1 Midwestern State University Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
The Greyhounds (3-4-2) are in need of a big win after dropping four straight and the Mustangs (8-0-1) are the perfect team for ENMU to show they are still contenders on the national stage. The team is 2-18-3 all-time against Midwestern.
Head coach Paul Tate said, "We can put a big speed bump into their season. A win for us would be a game changer for our season, to be able to produce against a top caliber team."
Midwestern is coming off perhaps their biggest win of the season, beating No. 6 St. Edwards University 3-2. The Greyhounds fell to St. Edwards 8-0 earlier in the season.
The Mustangs haven't been flawless this season though, playing to a 2-2 tie against Lubbock Christian University prior to beating the Hilltoppers. ENMU played LCU to a 2-2 tie as well, back on Sept. 23.
Former ENMU soccer standout and current assistant coach Jehmaine Brooks said, "We are coming off a couple of tough loses, so now is the time for our guys to prove they are hungry. They need to fight for each other, fight for themselves and they need to show heart against Midwestern."
Following the match against the Mustangs, ENMU will play host to the University of Texas-Permian Basin Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Falcons are currently 4-6 on the season.
"I feel really comfortable going into our game with them after the first matchup got cancelled," said Tate. "We held the ball really well on them our first game and we had our chances."
The first matchup between UTPB and ENMU was cancelled on account of weather. The Greyhounds are 10-2-1 against the Falcons all-time.
