PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico track and field team is set to compete at the Lone Star Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday and Sunday.
On the men's side, the Hounds will be led by junior middle distance runner Ivar Moinat, who currently holds the Eastern New Mexico record and the sixth fastest 800-meter time in NCAA Division II at 1:51.00 (converted to 1:50.68 due to elevation). It is also currently the top time in the Lone Star Conference this season. Moinat placed third in the 800-meter at last year's LSC Indoor Championships after crossing the finish line in 1:53.24.
Moinat is also slated to run in the 4x400-meter relay along with Travonne Armstead, Brandon Chavez and Andrew Villegas, as the four-man team currently holds the ENMU record for fastest indoor time at 3:17.10.
On the women's side, the Hounds will be looking for big things out of Danee Bustos. The senior sprinter from Belen, N.M. is slated to compete in the 200-meter, 400-meter, high jump, and 4x400-meter relay at the LSC Championships. Bustos currently holds the 19th-best time in NCAA Division II in the 200-meter dash after finishing with a 24.66 (converted to 24.73 due to elevation) at the Texas Tech Open two weeks ago. Bustos placed third in the 200-meter event at last year's LSC Championships with a school record time of 24.52.
In the 400-meter, Bustos currently holds the second-fastest time, only behind teammate Kandice Miles at 55.96 as both marks were set in last year's LSC Championships, each placing fourth and fifth respectively. Bustos and Miles are set to compete in this year's 400-meter event as well as the 4x400-meter relay. The women's 4x400-meter team has high aspirations after the four-person team of Bustos, Miles, Kiana Covington and Maijah Mathis shattered the ENMU women's 4x400 indoor record at last week's Don Kirby Elite Invitational with a time of 3:56.15, beating the previous school record by more than three seconds.
Junior middle distance runner Mason Swanson will be seeking to defend her Lone Star Conference Championship in the 800-meter event. Competing in the final as a sophomore last season, Swanson turned in the top time in the final with a 2:20.39, beating out WTAMU senior Nikolina Hrelec by 0.08 seconds.
The first day of the championships is slated for a 9:30 a.m. start with the event wrapping up on Sunday, as day two is slated to start at 10 a.m.
