Campbell Breaks Record, Four Qualify For Finals After Day Two Of LSC Championships

PORTALES, N.M. – Freshman Jessica Campbell broke her own school record in the pentathlon and four ENMU runners advanced to tomorrow's final after the second day of the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

After coming into the meet with the ENMU record of 4107 points in the heptathlon, Campbell eclipsed her own record mark by 20 points with a final score of 4127, climbing from eighth to sixth after the first day of competition. Campbell's victory in the javelin racked up 640 points as her throw of 38.58-meters (126' 7") won the stage by nearly nine feet.

In the running events, a pair of Greyhounds sprinters were able to advance to the final heats in two events. Junior Kandice Miles made it to Saturday with a second place time in the 200-meter prelims with a 24.33 while also pulling out a third place finish in the 100-meter prelims after crossing the finish line in 11.91.

Maijah Mathis was the other woman's sprinter that advanced  to Saturday in two events after coming in fourth in both the 100-meter and 200-meter prelims with times of 11.98 and 24.63.

In the pole vault, freshman Kayla Stephens was able to net the Greyhounds four points after taking fifth with a 3.20-meter (10' 6") vault.

On the men's side, junior middle distance runner Ivar Moinat and freshman sprinter Andrew Villegas were able to advance to Saturday's final heats with strong performances in their respective prelims.

In the 800-meter prelims, Moinat turned in a fifth place time of 1:54.47, returning to the 800-meter final after taking third in the event during the LSC Indoor Championships.

Villegas was also able to advance to Saturday by the slimmest of margins in the 200-meter prelims. Villegas took eighth in the event with a career-best time of 21.82, improving upon his second-best mark in program history by 0.04 seconds. Villegas was able to slip in by beating Angelo State's Emmitt Seals by a few thousandths of a second.

Senior decathlete Ezra Bagwell was able to score four team points for the men's squad with a fifth place finish, tallying a total score of 5909.

Senior distance runner Garrett Meyer was also able to net a point for Eastern in the 3000-meter steeplechase, turning in an eighth-place time of 10:09.54 for his best time in the event this season.

The final day of the LSC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will begin at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow with the completion of the hammer throw event that was postponed due to inclement weather causing a one-hour and 20 minute delay on Friday. The women's javelin will open the field events with an 11 a.m. start while championship running events will begin at 4:30 p.m. with women's 4x100-meter relay.
