RICHARDSON, Texas –
Jose Murillo is the Lone Star Conference's Defensive Player of the Week after helping Eastern New Mexico beat Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville this week.
"Jose (Murillo) is such a hard worker and a great person," said head coach
Brent Owen after learning about the forward's accolade. "He anchored our defense with seven blocked shots. Those plays are very important because they often lead to transition baskets for us on the other end."
The Chihuahua, Mexico native scored eight points, hauled in six rebounds, swatted two shots, and added an assist in the win over the Dustdevils Thursday. The Hounds 56-51 victory was just their second in program history over TAMIU.
Murillo controlled the block party Saturday evening as he finished with a career-high five blocks on the day. He scored six points and added seven boards in the 73-65 win over the top seeded team in the LSC's East Division.
His growth and development this year has been off the charts and will only continue in the future," said Owen. "He has many more LSC awards coming to him as a Greyhound."
The freshman has come out strong for ENMU this season averaging 7.5 points per contest and grabbing 4.4 rebounds per appearance. He ranks fourth among conference players with 25 blocks on the season.
ENMU's win over TAMUK marked the 1000th win in men's basketball history.
