PORTALES, N.M. – After claiming a series win against #15 St. Edward's, Eastern New Mexico Baseball head back out on the road to start a two week road trip. The Greyhounds start the trip away from home with a four-game series against West Texas A&M at Wilder Park this weekend. The series begins on Friday, Mar. 3, at 1 p.m. for a nine-inning game. The two teams face off for a seven-inning double-header on Saturday, Mar. 4, with first pitch of game one at 1 p.m. The series finale will take place on Sunday, Mar. 5, with the nine-inning game starting at 12 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Eastern New Mexico came out onto of the #15 St. Edward's University Hilltoppers, taking a pair of the three game series (game four was canceled due to unsafe field conditions). In game one,
Noah De La Riva struck out a career best nine batters in the Hounds 8-4 win.
Cooper Hamilton finished 3-4 at the plate, while
Nick Schifftner,
Jonatan Clough, and
Jayden Martinez each had two RBIs. The next day,
Adrian Rubio pitched a complete game effort in ENMU's 6-1 victory. During the final game of the series, the Hilltoppers captured a 6-5 victory in eight innings.
Demetrio Archuleta posted three hits at the plate (double, triple, and homerun), with ENMU scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
Entering this weekend, the Greyhounds hold a 6-9 record with the same LSC record. ENMU's so far this season have a .279 batting average, with 68 runs scored and 122 hits this season. On the hill, the Greyhounds pitching staff holds a 6.50 ERA, with 82 strikeouts.
The Greyhounds lineup is led by Hummel, posting a team best 19 hits, .388 BA, 11 runs scored, on base percentage (.455), and five doubles. Archuleta holds a .349 batting average after striking six hits this past weekend, and Clough leads the group in RBIs with 12 and a team best .673 slugging percentage.
Six different Greyhounds have a win this season, with Rubio and De La Riva picking up their first victory this past weekend. De La Riva leads all starting pitchers with a 4.34 ERA, and
Julian Lopez posts a team low 3.27 ERA.
Ruger Bravo holds down a team high 23 strikeouts, while
Vernon Hart has a save this season.
SCOUTING THE BUFFALOS
West Texas A&M have won their last two games, beating Montana State-Billings, 22-5, along with a victory over Colorado State-Pueblo, 18-12, moving to 9-5 overall and 7-5 in conference play. In its last LSC series, the Buffs took two games from St. Edward's in a four-game series. WT won the first two games, 5-4 and 2-0, but fell in the remaining games, 8-1 and 8-7.
The Buffs come into the series as one of the top hitting teams in the conference, ranking in the top three for batting average (2
nd, .326), on-base percentage (2
nd, .449), and slugging percentage (1
st, .532). Additionally, the WT bats have 157 hits, 120 RBI's, and 136 runs scored. West Texas A&M currently have a 6.83 ERA, allowing 134 hits, 99 runs, and an opposing batting average of .296.
Adam Becker is one of the top hitters in the conference, sporting a .468 batting average (1
st in LSC), .535 on-base percentage (3
rd in LSC), and .839 slugging percentage (1
st in LSC). Beck also leads the team in hits (29, 2
nd in LSC), runs scored (23, 3
rd in LSC), and RBI's (20, 6
th in LSC). Along with Becker's hitting, Ryan Johnson, Eddy Savoie, Will Fuenning, and Mike Manetta all hold a batting average over .300.
Nick Marshall leads the Buffs starting rotation with a 3.15 ERA and a 2-0 record as the staffs ace. Isaac Keehn also has two wins on the season, with a team high 20 strikeouts. From the bullpen, Gavin Pringle has a 5-0 record overall with a team low .190 opposing batting average. Tyler Cornett has a conference best three saves on the season in six appearances.
