Chilly weather doesn't stop Hounds from marking multiple PR's

Eastern New Mexico track and field showcase talents at West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico competed at the Buffalo Invitational hosted by West Texas A&M Saturday.

The weather was less than ideal as 20+ mile per hour winds made a cloudy day in the high 40's feel like it was near freezing temperatures.

Several teams removed runners in the meet forcing the day's events to sit on a running schedule.

ENMU did see a handful of student-athletes make impressive marks on the day.

Freshman Kennedy Ulmer made the most of the situation by taking second in the discus throwing 42.95m (140' 11") and doing the same in the shot put with a 12.42m (40' 9.5") mark. Both of those results were personal bests for her.

Tamia Smith took third in the hammer throwing 41.17m (135' 1") and her teammate Tatiana Hall finished in eighth with a 32.78m (107' 6") toss. Smith finished first in the shot put after a 12.60m (41' 4.25") throw.

Jha'Niah Johnson hit a personal top mark in the discus with her sixth throw of the day. She was able to finish at 38.20m (125' 4").

The Greyhounds earned a first-place finish in the 3000 steeplechase as Lauren Griego finished the race in 13:18.18 in cold temperatures. Her time is tenth among runners in the conference and she is expected to compete in the event at the LSC outdoor track and field championships in two weeks.

Freshman Mahault Lebrun continues to excel in her first season with the team. She earned top honors in the 400m hurdles after finishing in 1:05.58.

The 1500m race was really close as Maritza Alvarez took second with a time of 5:28.61. Alvarez was with a few steps of the first-place finisher up until the final 200 meters. Kaylyn De La Rosa was also in a tight competition. The top three places in the 800m race were separated by 1.15 seconds. She took second and was just 0.13 seconds away from clinching the win.

Savannah Romero (PR - 1:03.72) took second and Meghan Rodriguez (1:03.74) finished third in the 400m.

Overall, the day for the women saw several top honors and previous top marks beat even though most competitors were running slower times.

The Hounds found continued success on the men's end throughout the meet. In the javelin, Alex Williams (53.35m – 175' 0") took first, Devis Cheruiyot (43.59m – 143' 0") took third, and Jude Murray (43.14m – 141' 6") snagged a fourth-place spot.

Freshman Jesse Woodruff competed in the discus and hit a personal best at 34.08m (111' 10"). Three Greyhounds starred in the shot put with Noe Ybaben (13.56m – 44' 6"), Malachi Torres (9.75m – 32' 0"), and Colin Ulrich (8.14m – 26' 8.5").

Luis Holguin took third in the pole vault with a 3.90m (12' 9.5") clearance.

Ethan Woodrome competed in a pair of events for ENMU at the meet. He finished the 1500m race in 4:48.31 to take eighth and clocked 2:27.28 in the 800m. His teammates Aiden Kepfer (2:14.42 – 7th) and Ricky Diaz (2:19.98 – 8th) also competed in the 800m.

Cheruiyot was the runner-up in the 400m after clocking in at 52.84 seconds.

Another freshman, John Magee, had an impressive finish in the 100m dash. His 11.26 second time was good for second and is his fastest, but after wind conversion it did not count as a personal record.

"Although the weather was not ideal," said head coach Joshua Harden after the meet. "I am proud of our team and competing very well."

Eastern New Mexico is set to compete next week at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout hosted by Texas Tech this Friday and Saturday.
