Greyhounds take on four different programs over the weekend in Odessa.

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Volleyball continues their season this weekend, heading down to Odessa, Texas for four matches at the Dr. Steve Aicinena "Iceman" Invitational. First the Greyhounds will face future LSC opponent Sul Ross State (Friday, Sept. 8 at 8 a.m.) and current LSC foe UT Permian Basin (Friday, Sept. 8 at 12 p.m.). The next day, ENMU will play Minnesota Crookston at 8 a.m. and end the trip against Southwest (N.M.) on Saturday, Sept. 9.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

  • The Greyhounds look to follow up a tightly contested 1-3 weekend from the week prior. Eastern started with two close 3-2 defeats against Western Colorado and Southwestern Oklahoma State. ENMU entered the win column with a 3-0 sweep of West Alabama, while (RV) Central Oklahoma beat ENMU 3-0 to end the trip.
  • Following their standout performance, Mikaela Garvin was selected to the Midwestern State Invitational All-Tournament Team. Garvin led the ENMU attack with 54 kills, 66.5 points, and 15.0 total blocks. The opposite hitter posted three matches with 10 or more kills and set a career best 25.5 points in the defeat to Western Colorado.
  • Overall, ENMU is posting 10.8 kills per set with just under 10 assists per set. The Greyhounds began the season with 2.3 blocks per set and 15.0 digs per set.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • Sul Ross State began the season with a 1-2 record, picking up a win over Lyon College (Ark.). The team is averaging 10.5 kills per set, with Daniella Garcia (2.91 k/s) and Cassandra Espinoza (2.09 k/s) leading the way. Tatyana Colon leads the defense with 4.82 digs per set and Edie Coleman and Garcia each have more than 0.80 blocks per set.
  • The Falcons picked up three wins in their opening tournament, only falling to Angleo State, 3-0. UTPB's attack has a healthy 11.6 kills per set, with 10.9 assists per set. On defense, the team is holding 16.6 digs per set and 2.2 blocks per set. Aaliyah Gray supplies 3.11 k/s and Gloria Geurin adds 2.91 k/s. The team's libero, Gabby Gregorski, leads the team with 5.15 digs per set. At the net, three different student-athletes have more than 1.0 blocks per set: Chyra Thompson (1.30 b/s), Mya Black (1.29 b/s), and April Egwu (1.25 b/s).
  • Minnesota Crookston and ENMU will match up for the first time in program history. The Golden Eagles enter the weekend after a tough 1-3 at the UP open. A win to Lake Superior State, 3-1, was the highlight with losses to Northern Michigan, 3-1, Northwood, 3-2, and Michigan Technological, 3-0. The team sports 8.3 kills per set, 7.6 assists per set, 12.5 digs per set, and 1.2 blocks per set. Audrey Cariveau leads the attack with 2.13 kills per set, while Dana Melby dishes out 6.19 assists per set.
  • The Mustangs of Southwest (N.M.) are still in search of the team's first win after going 0-5 in their opening matches of the season. From the two matches with statistics available, Southwest are finding 10.3 kills per set with 16.5 digs per set on defense. Mariah Samario adds 2.60 k/s to the attack, while Valeria Trevino contributes 2.33 k/s. In terms of assists, Kaitlin Reynolds and Valeria Rodriguez are closely matched with 4.17 and 4.67 a/s, respectively.
