ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico men's track and field competed the last two days at the New Mexico Team Open hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
"I think we're still working and we are seeing that progress for us," said head coach
Joshua Harden after the meet. "It is always great to get another meet in where there is a lot of great competition."
Eleven Hounds participated in sprints, distance, throws, and pole vault over the weekend and the competition proved to be tough. Conference foes West Texas A&M and Lubbock Christian were among the plethora of solid competitors.
The 60m proved to be a prime opportunity for a pair of Hounds to test where they are in terms of competition.
Alexander Johnson ran the event in 7.13s as he is coming off an early-season injury. Javelin specialist
Alex Williams used the meet as a great chance to work on speed training. The sophomore finished the race in 7.19s – a personal record.
Hemon Joseph and
Malachi Torres represented ENMU in the 200m. Joseph completed the lap around the vaulted track in 23.32s in his first recorded collegiate 200 time. Torres crossed the finish in 23.55s.
Bryce Owens ran the 400m for the first time in college. He finished the race in 54.46s. Owens also ran the 800m for the second week in-a-row crossing the line in 2:05.49s. His teammate
Ricky Diaz (2:30.05) also competed in the race.
The mile saw two Greyhounds compete –
Emmanuel Hernandez (5:26.95) and
Ethan Woodrome (5:29.84).
Joseph also competed in the 60m hurdles. He completed the sprint in 8.83s.
Pole vaulter
Luis Holguin cleared three different heights at the meet. His 4.01m (13-1.75) is his best indoor clearance.
Two Greyhounds finished things out for the program in the throws.
Noe Ybaben Burciaga posted a noticeable improvement in the weight throw going 13.64m (44-9) on his first throw. His best toss in the shot put was 12.89m (42-3.5).
First-year Hound
Kooper Ellis threw the weight 11.43m (37-6). He followed that with a 10.04m (32-11.25) toss in the shot put.
Eastern New Mexico will be back in Albuquerque next week for the Collegiate Classic. The Greyhounds will recognize the 1974 NAIA track and field national championships during the meet. An event at the convention center is scheduled for Friday night with team members attending.
