The Greyhounds face St. Mary's in conference opener on Saturday

PORTALES, N.M. – Beginning conference play on Saturday, Eastern New Mexico Men's Soccer face a tough task against St. Mary's battling the conference foe on Saturday, Oct. 5, beginning at 1 p.m. from Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium.

SERIES INSIGHT

  • The programs meet each other for the 19 times overall, with this being the 11th conference meeting. Overall, the Rattlers have a 12-5-1 series advantage against ENMU.
  • Last year when these two teams met, the Greyhounds shocked the Rattlers with a 4-2 home victory over the #16 ranked team in the nation (at the time). Prior to last year's ENMU win, St. Mary's were unbeaten in 10 straight matchups against the Greyhounds.
  • All the Greyhounds wins in the series history have come in Portales. Eastern are 5-4-0 on home soil, with last years win snapping a four-game home losing streak.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

  • The Greyhounds earned win in their final non-conference match of the season, beating Sul Ross State 2-0 after going five matches without a win. Eastern enter their conference season with a 2-2-3 overall record.
  • ENMU have potted nine goals this season, with four different student-athletes scoring twice. Nick Huenig, Arthur Macri, Pablo Nodar, and Ben Sauerländer each have found the back of the net twice. Nodar recently was named LSC Defensive Player of the Week, following a shutout against Sul Ross State, while scoring the game winning goal. Sauerländer is also the joint leader for assists, leading the team with six points this season.
  • Two goalkeepers have split time in net this season for the Greyhounds, with Catalin Nastuta playing the last four games for Eastern, and Milo Paci playing the opening three matches. Nastuta earned a shutout in their last match, with 1.75 goals against average, and a .667 save percentage. Paci also has one clean sheet this season, while sporting a .733 save percentage, and 1.33 goals against average.
  • Huenig leads the team this season with 12 shots this season, as the Greyhounds find 7.3 shots per contest. Eastern are responsible for 85 fouls, while drawing 13 yellow cards.

SCOUTING THE RATTLERS

  • St. Mary's sit at the top of the LSC standing after the first conference matches of the season, winning 3-0 against Lubbock Christian at home. The Rattlers stand at 5-2-2 coming into the weekend, with a 1-0 conference record.
  • Gael Gallegos is the top scorer for the Rattlers (six goals) and is second in the conference for goals behind Mere Escobar of Midwestern State. Gallegos' 13 points, 22 shots, and 10 shots on goal lead St. Mary's. Cooper Stephens has an important contribution of two goals and an assist, while Sofian Maghouz has a team high three assists.
  • In goal, Johnny Thurbin has played every minute for St. Mary's supplying four shutouts in that time. The keeper has made 23 saves in net this season, allowing less than a goal per game (0.67). Thurbin's saves percentage sits just under 80%.
