PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico men's and women's track and field will stay in the Land of Enchantment for a second-straight week as they head to the New Mexico Collegiate Classic Friday and Saturday. Before the Hounds begin competing at the Albuquerque Convention Center, please read the 4x4 Preview:
1x4 – Record Weekend: Grad student
Tamia Smith continues to set major marks for Eastern New Mexico. The throws specialist holds the second-best mark in school history in the weight throw at 15.30m (50-2.5) after last week's New Mexico Team Open. Not only did she earn one personal record, the Texas native earned two at the event featuring competitors from all over the country. Smith tossed the shot 14.07m (46-2) during her fifth attempt.
2x4 – Ready Set Go: There will be 43 entries by Eastern New Mexico in the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. The Greyhounds will see a strong presence from the sprints core as
Grizell Scarlett,
Jodian Stewart,
Riley Midgett,
Ambrosia Francis, and
Malia Sanchez are expected to compete in the 60m. On the men's side,
Hemon Joseph,
Alex Williams, and
Malachi Torres have spots in the 60m. Several other short distance races see Hounds represented including the 200m and 400m.
3x4 – Multi Preparation: Hemon Joseph will use the next meet to prepare for multi competition. Joseph is expected to compete in the long jump and pole vault on top of the 60m race previously mentioned. The transfer from Cloud County Community College holds a top score of 4632 in the heptathlon after a seventh place finish during the NJCAA indoor championships in 2023. Some of his strengths are in the throws, jumps, and sprints. His best 60m time is 7.00s and his best shot put toss is 12.62m (41-5).
4x4 – Recognizing Excellence: Eastern New Mexico University will honor the 50th anniversary of the 1974 track and field championship Friday night at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The championship squad featured six all-americans – J.O. Amoah, Mike Boit, Joseph Mengich, Phillip Ndoo, Richard Shanahan, and Dennis Williams. The title was the school's first in program history. They went on to win the title in 1976, as well.
