Women's track and field earns multiple top-three finishes at West Texas A&M Spring Break Open

Freshman Deziree Bosquez wins javelin, sprints group provides strong support in packs

CANYON, Texas – A cold, wind, and wet weekend did not ruin Eastern New Mexico women's track and field chances at competing in the 2024 West Texas A&M Spring Break Open. Despite the cold conditions, a handful of Greyhounds earned top personal marks and top-three finishes in their respective events.

"With the delays, I think they handled themselves pretty well and put themselves in positions to do well in their events," said head coach Joshua Harden after the meet. "It was a great start to the outdoor season."

The sprints crew represented by the numbers in Canyon Saturday afternoon. Newcomer Riley Midgett held top times among ENMU sprinters in the two events she ran. The 100m saw finishes from the aforementioned Midgett (12.60s), Ambrosia Francis (12.61s), and Malia Sanchez (13.37s).

Midgett (26.59s) continued a strong meet in the 200m. The other finishers for Eastern in the event include Ambrosia Francis (26.61s), Meghan Rodriguez (27.44s), Mariana Marquez (27.96s), Malia Sanchez (28.52s), and Savannah Romero (28.93s).

To close up the track events, ENMU saw four student-athletes in the 400m. The times for the Greyhounds include a runner-up finish from Helena Klutsey-Carboo (57.33s) followed by her teammates Meghan Rodriguez (1:02.62s), Mariana Marquez (1:04.52s), and Savannah Romero (1:04.87s).

The throws continue to be a consistent spot for Eastern New Mexico. Graduate student Tamia Smith took runner-up accolades with a 13.72m toss in the shot put.

Smith was also the top thrower among Eastern competitors in the hammer as she marked 43.25m. She was joined by Jha'Niah Johnson (35.97m), Samantha Medina (28.80m), and Allysun Jones (27.30m) in the event.

The highlight of Saturday's slate was definitely a win in the javelin by Deziree Bosquez (38.48m) as she debuted for the Hounds for the first time today. Kennedy Ulmer took third in the event after a 37.69m toss.

"She was excited about this weekend," said Harden when asked about the win in javelin. "To throw a personal record is a great start to your freshman year."
