CANYON, Texas – A cold, wind, and wet weekend did not ruin Eastern New Mexico women's track and field chances at competing in the 2024 West Texas A&M Spring Break Open. Despite the cold conditions, a handful of Greyhounds earned top personal marks and top-three finishes in their respective events.
"With the delays, I think they handled themselves pretty well and put themselves in positions to do well in their events," said head coach
Joshua Harden after the meet. "It was a great start to the outdoor season."
The sprints crew represented by the numbers in Canyon Saturday afternoon. Newcomer
Riley Midgett held top times among ENMU sprinters in the two events she ran. The 100m saw finishes from the aforementioned Midgett (12.60s),
Ambrosia Francis (12.61s), and
Malia Sanchez (13.37s).
Midgett (26.59s) continued a strong meet in the 200m. The other finishers for Eastern in the event include
Ambrosia Francis (26.61s),
Meghan Rodriguez (27.44s),
Mariana Marquez (27.96s),
Malia Sanchez (28.52s), and
Savannah Romero (28.93s).
To close up the track events, ENMU saw four student-athletes in the 400m. The times for the Greyhounds include a runner-up finish from Helena Klutsey-Carboo (57.33s) followed by her teammates
Meghan Rodriguez (1:02.62s),
Mariana Marquez (1:04.52s), and
Savannah Romero (1:04.87s).
The throws continue to be a consistent spot for Eastern New Mexico. Graduate student
Tamia Smith took runner-up accolades with a 13.72m toss in the shot put.
Smith was also the top thrower among Eastern competitors in the hammer as she marked 43.25m. She was joined by
Jha'Niah Johnson (35.97m),
Samantha Medina (28.80m), and
Allysun Jones (27.30m) in the event.
The highlight of Saturday's slate was definitely a win in the javelin by
Deziree Bosquez (38.48m) as she debuted for the Hounds for the first time today.
Kennedy Ulmer took third in the event after a 37.69m toss.
"She was excited about this weekend," said Harden when asked about the win in javelin. "To throw a personal record is a great start to your freshman year."
The only event on Friday evening – discus – showcased four student-athletes. Those results include
Kennedy Ulmer (40.14m),
Samantha Medina (37.08m),
Jha'Niah Johnson (33.20m), and
Allysun Jones (30.59m).
ENMU will now wait to compete next at the University of Arizona beginning Friday, March 22.Â
