PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico University men's and women's track and field head to Albuquerque for a single day meet hosted by the University of New Mexico. Before the Greyhounds compete at the Don Kirby Tailwind Open, please take a look at the 4x4 Preview:
1.) Lone Star Recognition: Eastern New Mexico's
Alex Williams was honored as the conference's men's field athlete of the week. The Kingston, Jamaica native broke his own personal/school record at 66.90m (219-6) in the javelin. He currently sits eighth among DII student-athletes and second in the south central region. He is on the verge of advancing to a second-straight NCAA DII outdoor track and field championship if his current ranking stands in the top-16 by the final meet of the season.
2.) More Provos: On top of
Alex Williams' provisional mark, three other Greyhound events featured a result within the minimum needed to qualify for the national competition in Emporia, Kansas. The 4x100 squad of
Jodian Stewart,
Riley Midgett,
Helena Carboo-Klutsey, and
Grizell Scarlett clocked in at 46.57s which ranks 44
th among all DII programs. They will need to cut close to 0.80s to reach the required top-16 ranking.
Hemon Joseph his a provisional in javelin with a throw of 59.26m (194-5). He sits in 36
th and will likely need to cover more than four meters to get within the top-16 range. The other provisional came from sophomore
Kennedy Ulmer who tossed 44.30m (145-4) in the javelin and now sits in 18
th among the nation. She will need to add at least half a meter to get within the top-16 based on the current results around the nation.
3.) Don Kirby Outlook: A total of 33 entries will be made for Eastern New Mexico at the Don Kirby Tailwind. The meet will begin with javelin at 3:45 p.m. and the first event on the track is set to be the 4x100 at 4:30 p.m. The final events of the day include the shot put and triple jump at 6 p.m. and the 4x400 relay set for 7:20 p.m. Several schools from the region will compete in the event, including New Mexico, New Mexico Highlands, UTEP, Fort Lewis, and Adams State.
