LUBBOCK, Texas – Eastern New Mexico University women's track and field posted a strong outing at the 2024 Corky/Crofoot Shootout. A handful of runners ran personal bests to highlight the final regular season meet.
"It was a work week. That is the best way to describe it," said head coach
Joshua Harden after the meet. "We competed late at night and it was an opportunity to get runs in."
Windy conditions this weekend altered several events at the meet in Lubbock. Most competitions were set for Friday evening which meant the meet did not finish until close to midnight.
Grizell Scarlett paced the competition in the short sprints. The freshman ran the 100m in 11.31s to place fourth in the field of 47 runners. Her time is third among all DII sprinters and first in the Lone Star Conference. She ran well in the 200m with a 24.02s finish. She is the 27
th best runner in that event in DII.
Also competing in the 100m were
Ambrosia Francis (12.23s),
Riley Midgett (12.35s), and
Malia Sanchez (12.76s). The 200m proved to be a major sign of improvement for ENMU with
Ambrosia Francis (25.59s),
Riley Midgett (25.56s), and
Malia Sanchez (12.76s) all running top collegiate marks. Also running the 200m included
Mariana Marquez (28.08s) and
Meghan Rodriguez (26.91s).
The 400m saw three ENMU student-athletes.
Minerva Cerda Hernandez (1:00.92),
Meghan Rodriguez (1:02.76), and
Mariana Marquez (1:03.72) all competed in the event.
Two Hounds threw the hammer this weekend.
Tamia Smith nearly earned a personal best at 46.53m (152-8) and her teammate
Jha'Niah Johnson tossed 39.36m (129-1).
Kennedy Ulmer represented ENMU is the javelin with a throw of 4.56m (136-4). Ulmer hit her second NCAA DII provisional mark of the season as she threw the discus 46.04m (151-0). She currently sits in the top-30 among DII throwers in both the javelin and discus.Â
ENMU will now take a two week break before they compete at the 2024 Lone Star Conference outdoor track and field championships hosted by Angelo State University.
