ENMU women's track and field earns six personal best marks at Jo Meaker Classic

Greyhound track and field competes in two-day event in Canyon, Texas

CANYON, Texas – Eastern New Mexico women's track and field closed out the 2024 Jo Meaker Classic with six personal best marks and six top-five finishes.

"I think our team is coming to form," said head coach Joshua Harden after the meet. "It's a step in the right direction for us."

The event began Thursday afternoon with a handful of ENMU student-athletes competing in various events. Allysun Jones hit the 30-mark for the first time in the hammer as she threw 30.63m (100-6) during her final toss of the meet. Three other Hounds competed in the hammer – Jha'Niah Johnson 43.51m (142-9), Tamia Smith 42.94m (140-10), and Samantha Medina 33.16m (108-9).

Two jumpers competed on the first day for ENMU. Jodian Stewart posted an NCAA provisional mark with a 5.92m (19-5.25) mark in the long jump. Her performance ranks as the fifteenth furthest among DII student-athletes. First year Hound, Aeriana Langley survived her third attempt at 1.55m (5-1) in the high jump. She finished the day with three total clearances.

The final result for Eastern New Mexico on Thursday came from Helena Carboo-Klutsey. The freshman ran a personal best 56.64s in the 400m.

Heading into Friday, the Hounds had six more events to participate in. Grizell Scarlett got the day in the right direction with an NCAA provisional time in the 100m. Her 11.35s finish was second on the day and stands fourth among DII sprinters.

One of the biggest factors at the meet in Canyon, Texas was the wind. The gauge reported on the final results came from 3.2 to 6.5. The strong tailwind guided five different student-athletes to quick times in the 200m. Those individuals include Ambrosia Francis (25.08s), Riley Midgett (25.47s), Malia Sanchez (26.29s), Meghan Rodriguez (26.55s), and Savannah Romero (27.85s).

Two runners represented ENMU in the 400m. Mariana Marquez (1:02.79) and Savannah Romero (1:03.68) both came shy of earning personal best times.

Minerva Cerda Hernandez took home runner-up honors in the pole vault. The first-year Hound cleared a personal best 3.30m (10-10). She was the top competitor among the Lone Star Conference schools at the meet.

The throws grew had a strong outing with several key finishes. Tamia Smith took second in the shot put at 13.64m (44-9). Her teammate Kennedy Ulmer took fourth after a personal best throw of 13.03m (42-9).

Ulmer continued with another strong throw in the discus. After earning a PB at last week's Greyhound Open, she took first place honors with a 43.54m (142-10) result. Her teammate Johnson posted a personal best in the event at 38.38m (125-11). First year Hounds Samantha Medina (34.84m (114-4)) and Allysun Jones (28.55m (93-8)) also competed in the event.

The Greyhounds will now focus their attention towards the John Jacobs Invitational taking place next week in Norman, Oklahoma.
