SAN ANGELO, Texas – For a second-straight Lone Star Conference outdoor championship,
Tamia Smith secured points for Eastern New Mexico University.
On a blistering hot day, the graduate student took fifth in her final appearance in the hammer throw. Smith tossed 46.08m (151-2) on her fourth attempt of the afternoon and secured the fifth-place nod. In 2023, she took fourth with a current personal best mark of 46.85m (153-8).
"It was really good," said Smith when asked about her performance in the hammer throw. "It's nice to see that I can be in the top-five in both of my events. Everyone always see's me excel in shot (put), but no one really see's my growth in hammer."
Her teammate
Jha'Niah Johnson came close to qualifying for the finals with an eleventh-place finish. She threw 42.00m (137-10) at the conference meet.
Another strong event for ENMU was in the 200m.
Freshman
Grizell Scarlett will run in Saturday's final for the short sprint as she took the fifth quickest time among competitors in the preliminaries. Her personal best of 23.91s puts her in prime position to help the Greyhounds score big points on the final day of the meet.
First year Hounds,
Ambrosia Francis and
Riley Midgett, also competed in the 200m. Francis had a blazing quick personal record of 25.34s, while Midgett was not too far behind at 25.71s.
Celina Thomas entered the triple jump, but was unable to land a mark in the event.
ENMU continues day two of the outdoor track and field championships with six different events. The Hounds will be represented in the discus, high jump, 100m, 400m, long jump, and pole vault. The long jump and pole vault were moved up by one day in precaution for potential rain Saturday.
