Strong start to 2025 for ENMU women's track and field at Friday Night Axe 'Em Open

Greyhounds women's track and field sets several personal best marks at first meet of calendar year

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – It was a successful outing for Eastern New Mexico women's track and field at the 2025 Friday Night Axe 'Em Open hosted by Northern Arizona University.

"We went out there and were ready to compete," said head coach Joshua Harden after the meet. "It's nice to see some things come together for the group. We have big expectations and we need to keep working to get better."

The highlight for the women's program came from the throws group as they had four personal best marks in the weight throw with a duo earning a spot in the finals. The Hounds also had one member of the program make it to the finals in the shot put after a personal top indoor mark.

Jha'Niah Johnson earned a trip to the finals in the weight throw after her first attempt of the competition went 14.36m (47-1.5). The junior bettered her personal best throw in the finals with a toss of 14.90m (48-10.75). Also joining Johnson in the finals was Kennedy Ulmer who threw a personal best 13.48m (44-2.75).

Two other Hounds had personal bests in the event. Newcomer Leslie Jaquez threw 13.19m (43-3.25) and Allysun Jones threw 11.06m (36-3.5).

Ulmer continued a strong performance in the shot put. She posted a 12.83m (42-1.25) throw, which is her best throw in an indoor competition and currently ranks in the top 50 among DII throwers.

Celina Thomas shined in the jumps and sprints for ENMU. Thomas now ranks in the top 30 among DII competitors in the triple jump after leaping 11.46m (37-7.25). Her personal best mark came on her third jump in an effort that got her a bid to compete in the finals. Thomas finished second among 12 entrants. The sophomore also posted a personal best time in the 60m with a 8.13s finish.

Freshman Devyn Ericksen broke her own school record in the 60m hurdles. Her 9.30s time allowed her to finish 14th among the field today.

Greyhound women's track and field will now focus their attention on the next two meets as the program will split up at two different competitions next week. One half of the team will be at Texas Tech for the Corky Classic while the other half will be at Oklahoma for the Owen Hewett Invite.
