Men's track and field finds success at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational in Albuquerque

Eastern New Mexico stays in Land of Enchantment for competition against top teams in DI and the Lone Star Conference

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It was a jam-packed weekend for Eastern New Mexico men's track and field. The program competed at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational over the last two days.

A handful of sprinters, mid-distance runners, and throwers entered the meet for ENMU. Other schools in the meet included DI foes Grand Canyon, Arizona, California, Stanford, and New Mexico among a handful of others. Angelo State and Lubbock Christian from the Lone Star Conference also competed in the meet.

First year Greyhound, Nicolo Salaris ran both the 60m and 200m races for the program. Salaris finished the 60m in 7.09s. His best time this season is 7.0s from a competition hosted by Pittsburg State. The Como, Italy native also ran the 200m sprint in 22.15s. His time was two-hundredths of a second shy of his best collegiate mark.

One of the top runners for ENMU this weekend was Kyler Joe. The Kirtland, N.M. native finished the 200m race in 22.11s and the 400m race in 48.77s. His 400m time is a personal best mark.

"I felt pretty good. I knew I had to kick (on the second lap) and used it to my advantage," said Kyler Joe when asked about his personal record race. "Everyone is getting their times in and continuing to improve."

Brian Norton and Thomas Aerdts represented the team in the 800m. On Saturday's final race for Eastern New Mexico, Norton and Aerdts needed to wait a little longer as a brief in-arena emergency forced the competition to be delayed an extra 20 minutes. Despite the delay, both competitors posted sub-1:58 times. Norton finished in 1:57.10 and Aerdts completed the race in 1:57.81.

Freshman Jonathon Pipes ran the 60m hurdles. He earned a 8.68s time in the event.

Two throwers represented ENMU this weekend. Noe Ybaben-Burciaga threw 12.96m (42-6.25) in the shot put and 14.15m (46-5.25) in the weight throw. His teammate Kooper Ellis competed in Friday's weight throw and posted a 13.14m (43-1.5) mark.

Eastern New Mexico men's track and field will send multis specialist Hemon Joseph to Wichita State next week in preparation for February's Lone Star Conference championship. Other Greyhounds will head to the Stan Scott Memorial hosted by Texas Tech.
