ENMU welcomes New Mexico Highlands in two-game non-conference series

PORTALES, N.M. – With a change from a road trip to a home series, Eastern New Mexico Baseball welcomes New Mexico Highlands for a home two-game non-conference series at Greyhound Baseball Field this weekend. The series opener is set for Saturday, February 22, with first pitch at 4 p.m. The series ends on Sunday, February 23, with the single game starting at 1 p.m.

SERIES INSIGHT

  • The two in-state rivals have a long history against each other despite never playing in the same conference. The Cowboys have a 50-45 record against the Greyhounds, dating back to 1992.
  • Eastern has had the most recent success, win the last four games against New Mexico Highlands. During the four-game winning streak, Eastern has outscored the Cowboys 50-17.
  • Before the ENMU four game winning streak, New Mexico Highlands won the final three games of a four-game series in 2015. The Cowboys took the home series against the Greyhounds, with 86 runs being scored between the two teams over the four-game stretch.
  • Both teams first met in 1992, as the Greyhounds took the first ever game between the two (16-13, 3/8/1992), but the Cowboys captured the final two games to win the first ever series.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

  • The Greyhounds (5-7) look to bounce back after falling in a sweep in the last series and snap a five-game losing skid. Eastern played West Texas A&M close in both games of the doubleheader in a pair of losses, but the Buffs dominated games one and four to secure a sweep.
  • Eastern New Mexico on the season is batting .266, supplying 92 hits and 60 runs scored. The Greyhounds have forced 45 walks, while swiping 18 bases. As for extra base hits, ENMU has 21 doubles, a pair of triples, and eight home runs. On the hill, ENMU's pitching staff have a 6.01 ERA after the first 12 games, giving up 71 runs on 118 hits.
  • In the batter's box, Willie Ponce leads the team with a .447 batting average. The Greyhound shortstop is also the team leader in hits (17), runs (13), and joint leader in RBIs (7). Adrien Martin has been a productive bat in the lineup, recording a .350 batting average in 20 plate appearances. Luciano Terilli has seven RBIs as the lead-off hitter, along with a team high nine walks.
  • Nick Mooney has put together three solid outings to begin the season for ENMU, holding a team best 1.59 ERA and .228 opponent batting average. Cole Lancaster leads the team in strikeouts (14), with a combined shutout. Demitrius DiMatteo and Adrian Rubio have logged the most relief innings in the Greyhounds bullpen, with the former recording seven strikeouts over 7.1 innings.

SCOUTING THE COWBOYS

  • New Mexico Highlands (7-5) enter the series on a five-game winning streak, as the Cowboys swept Oklahoma Panhandle State during their last weekend of action. NMHU is yet to start their conference play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).
  • The Cowboys sport a solid batting average of .331 after their first 12 games, scoring 93 runs in that time from 127 hits. NMHU is averaging over a home run per game with 14 long balls during the season. New Mexico Highlands has only stolen one base this season on two attempts. Pitching wise, the Cowboys have a 6.20 ERA, allowing 95 runs from 109 hits.
  • Carlos Chavez has the top batting average for NMHU, sporting a .435 mark to begin the season. Chavez leads the team with 20 hits, four home runs, and 21 RBIs. Bryant O'Neill and Tony Leger each have a batting average over the .400 mark, with O'Neill's 15 RBIs being second on the team.
  • Starting three games this season, Dominick Castillo holds a 2.04 ERA in 17.2 IP. Castillo paces the team for strikeouts (13), allowing just six runs. Ramon Brion and Andrew Rodriguez are the other primary starters, with their first three outings all being starts. Aidan Joyce leads the bullpen with four relief appearances, with a 0.00 ERA over 5.2 innings.
