Grizell Scarlett wins back-to-back 60m championships, women’s team takes seventh

Eastern New Mexico boasts nine entries scoring points at LSC championships

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It was a successful two days for Eastern New Mexico women's track and field at the 2025 Lone Star Conference indoor track and field championships.

"We had some solid performances," remarked head coach Joshua Harden after the meet. "Our girls are tough. They give great energy to each other. They came in and battled everywhere."

Three different Greyhounds graced the podium during the championships.

For a second-straight season, Grizell Scarlett is the 60m champion. The sophomore sprinter posted a season best 7.50s to run ahead of the field and earn another gold medal.

Harden noted Scarlett's performance as a major positive to be able to go into the meet as the defending champion and stay that way.

Scarlett was not the only point-scorer for ENMU in the 60m. Her teammate Jodian Stewart had an excellent weekend at the championships. Stewart earned a spot in the top eight after a personal record time of 7.63s. She followed that with a 7.74s finish to earn sixth in the event. The race between sixth and seventh was decided by just one-hundredth of a second.

Stewart also had a podium finish in the long jump. She cleared 5.85m (19-2.5) to finish second in the field event. Also scoring in long jump was Celina Thomas who went 5.49m (18-0.25) to ink a sixth place finish. This was the first time Thomas has scored in a conference championship.

Also on the podium was sophomore Minerva Cerda Hernandez. The pole vault specialist broke her own school record again with a 3.40m (11-1.75) clearance. She had begun the meet at the 3.20m mark and needed all three tries to earn that height. Cerda Hernandez ended up clearing the following two heights on her first attempts and securing the podium finish.

Freshman Devyn Ericksen had one of the best performances in the prelims from ENMU. The Farmington, N.M. native bested her school record with a 9.10s finish to ink her spot in the finals. Ericksen ended up finishing eighth with a 9.17s time. In just two months, Ericksen has improved 0.38s off her 60m hurdles time.

A school record was broken in the final event of the night. The women's 4x400 team comprised of Helena Carboo-Klutsey, Minerva Cerda Hernandez, Gabriela Elizalde, and Meghan Rodriguez set the school record in the event with a 3:51.40 finish. The sixth place nod helped the program earn some more valuable points to the total team score total of 37 points.

Eastern also got some much-needed points from a couple field events on Saturday afternoon. Genesis Carter placed seventh in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 10.97m (36-0). Junior Kennedy Ulmer closed out the championships in eighth with a 12.79m (41-11.5) throw in shot put.

ENMU has now finished in the top seven for two consecutive seasons as they held a sixth place finish in 2024.

The meet was not just highlighted by point scorers as several student-athletes made impressive personal best marks and made strides throughout the season that were rewarded at the championships this weekend.

One of those student-athletes is Jerriana McWilliams who took ninth this weekend in the triple jump with a 10.62m (34-10.25) clearance. Her personal best mark earned her a bid to have three more opportunities to get in the top eight.

Second year Hound Riley Midgett impressed in the 60m as she finished with a personal best 7.78s. She came just four spots shy from making the finals in the highly competitive event.

The program will now look forward to the 2025 outdoor season. The team is slated to compete seven meets in preparation for the conference championships hosted by the Greyhounds in Portales.
