Eastern faces nationally ranked UT Tyler in a four game slate this weekend

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Baseball welcomes top 5 national opponent #4 UT Tyler for a four-game series at Greyhound Baseball Field this weekend. The series starts on Saturday, March 15, playing a single game at 1 p.m. Next, the two teams face off in a doubleheader, set to begin at 1 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 16. Finally, the teams wrap up the series on Sunday, March 17, beginning at 12 p.m.

SERIES INSIGHT

  • Eastern and UT Tyler have only played each other as conference opponents, with the Patriots holding a 14-5 edge over the Greyhounds.
  • The teams will play just their second series against each other in Portales, with the Patriots taking three games of a four-game series in 2023.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

The Greyhounds came out hot, winning the first two games of the series, sweeping the doubleheader, 7-5 and 11-6. From then on, UT Permian Basin bats evened the series, winning 14-4 (7 Inn.) and 16-8.
  • As a team, Eastern is hitting .298 during the campaign, scoring 158 runs from 198 hits. ENMU has driven in 139 runs, recording 50 doubles, 10 triples, and 16 home runs. On the hill, the Greyhounds pitching staff has a 6.61 ERA, posting 128 strikeouts and an opposing batting average of .330.
  • After batting .500 this past weekend, Willie Ponce raised his team high batting average to .417. Luciano Terilli is just behind with a .390 batting average, as both Ponce and Terilli are nearly identical for hitting this season. Ponce and Terilli each have 30 hits, eight doubles, and a triple, while Terilli leads the squad in runs scored (26), home runs (5), and walks (22). Jalen Freeman paces the squad for RBIs with 21, while taking a team best 16 stolen bases (12th in nation).
  • Nick Mooney has been the top arm for the Greyhounds this campaign, holding a team low 3.38 ERA and record of 4-1. Cole Lancaster leads the team with 30.0 IP this season, sporting a team high 25 strikeouts. Adrian Rubio has been ENMU's top relief pitcher, posting 21 strikeouts and a pair of saves in seven relief appearances over 17.1 innings. Josaiah Esterlla has been inserted into the staring rotation, winning his last two starts, with a 5.54 ERA over 13.0 innings.

SCOUTING THE #4 PATRIOTS

  • UT Tyler is off to one of their best starts in program history as a Division II program. Overall, this season the Patriots sit in first place in the LSC with a 19-6 record, with a 19-5 conference standing.
  • The Patriots are a well-rounded squad with a .330 batting average and 3.58 ERA, both sitting in the top three in the LSC. Offensively, UT Tyler has scored 202 runs from 268 hits, launching 27 home runs with 54 doubles and 188 RBIs. Leading the conference in ERA, UTT holds opposing hitters to a .267 opposing batting average, while striking out 158 hitters.
