Eastern and St. Mary's meet in San Antonio for a four-game conference series this weekend

PORTALES, N.M. – Winning their last eight consecutive games, Eastern New Mexico will head to St. Mary's in a LSC series with future postseason implications. The Series begins on Friday, April 4, playing a single game at 5 p.m. (MST) / 6 p.m. (CST). The series continues Saturday, April 7, with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. (MST) / 2 p.m. (MST) and 4 p.m. (MST) / 5 p.m. (CST). The two teams wrap up the four-game series on Sunday, April 8, with the finale scheduled for 12 p.m. (MST) / 1 p.m. (CST).

SERIES INSIGHT

  • St. Mary's lead the all-time series, 15-13, with the Greyhounds. However, ENMU hold a slight 8-7 conference record against the Rattlers.
  • Both teams have had success on their home fields in recent meetings. Each team has won the series when playing at home in the last four seasons. Last year, the Greyhounds took three of the four games on home turf against the Rattlers.
  • ENMU has a slight advantage for LSC record, winning eight of the 15 conference games. All the conference contests have taken place since 2021, as Eastern have won four of the last five meetings.
  • In last season's four game series, ENMU took both games of the doubleheader, including winning the series opener on a Landon Pyles walk-off single. ENMU captured the series final to secure the series win over the Rattlers.
  • Prior to facing each other as conference opponents, the team's first played each other at a neutral site in 1999, with the Greyhounds prevailing in Stephenville, Texas (5-4, 2/26/1999).

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

  • Eastern New Mexico (22-12, 20-12 LSC) come into the weekend winning eight games in a row, moving up to 5th place with four weeks to play in the conference calendar. The Greyhounds reached the 20-win mark in conference after a 28-6 (7 Inn.) win over Oklahoma Christian. The win finished off a four-game sweep of the Eagles, with ENMU having to earn the first three games with a trio of tight wins.
  • The Greyhounds offense has picked it up over the last few weeks, as the Greyhounds hold top-25 marks nationally in several categories this season. As a team, the Greyhounds have a .339 batting average (12th in nation), scoring 320 runs (10th in Division II), with 356 hits (17th in nation). ENMU have really excelled in hitting for extra bases, posting 81 doubles (10th in nation), 18 triples (5th in nation), and 43 home runs (22nd in nation), sporting a slugging percentage of .574 (9th in nation). Additionally, ENMU's 188 walks (15th in nation) and .460 on-base percentage (8th in nation) are key figures in the offense. Collectively, ENMU have a 6.52 ERA with 225 runs allowed from 334 hits. Eastern has struck out 198 batters, with opposing hitters batting .322.
  • Willie Ponce has had a standout season so far, batting .444 with 52 hits and 35 RBIs. Luciano Terilli leads the team with 47 runs scored, 55 hits, while slugging .773 with a team high 30 walks. Anthony Cortese had 12 RBIs last weekend, hitting two home runs, while Jalen Freeman has a team best 40 RBIs. All nine expected starters in the batting lineup have a batting average above .300 entering the weekend.
  • Josaiah Estrella and Cole Lancaster have been consistent starting pitchers in recent weeks, with both usually starting both doubleheader games. SCOUTING THE RATTLERS

  • St. Mary's (21-13, 19-13 LSC) are just behind the Greyhounds in the standings, trailing by just one game. The Rattlers had an impressive weekend last time out, going on the road and winning three games against West Texas A&M. After falling in the series opener, the Rattlers picked up three consecutive wins of 11-5, 14-9, and 7-6.
  • The Rattlers this season hold a .306 batting average, while scoring 240 runs on 329 hits. St. Mary's have supplied 62 doubles, five triples, and 37 home runs. Defensively, StMU have a 5.38 ERA, with opposing hitters holding a .271 batting average. On the season, the Rattlers have given up 208 runs on 278 hits.
  • Hogan Heller has the top batting average on the team (.355), but Jacob Elizondo had a team high for hits (47) and runs scored (32). Five different Rattlers have over 20 RBIs this season, while Garrett Brooks leads the team with 29 RBIs. Easton Parrish has a team high eight home runs, with 26 RBIs and six doubles.
