BSB Four Bases: No. 18 St. Mary's

Eastern New Mexico hosts four-game series against nationally ranked Rattlers

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico baseball is coming off their first series win of the season and will host No. 18 St. Mary's Apr. 2-4 at Greyhound Baseball Field. Before the four-game series, please look at the Four Bases Preview:

First Base – Victorious in Edmond: Eastern New Mexico took three of four games against Oklahoma Christian last week. They did so with a 9-7 win on Friday and a pair of wins (15-11, 20-9) on Saturday. It is the first time ENMU has won a series since last year's four-game series over OC (Mar. 28-30). It is also the first road series win since a four-game sweep over Sul Ross State (Mar. 21-23) in Alpine, Texas. Eastern is now 7-8 all-time in games played in Edmond. The Greyhounds are also 8-2 in their last 10 games over OC. In game one over the Eagles, ENMU was led by a three-hit day from Adrien Martin and an 8.1 innings outing from Demitrius DiMatteo. The first game of the Saturday doubleheader saw Eastern get a season-best five hits from both Eiji Sawamura and Gabriel Watson. Cole Lancaster picked up his sixth win of the year during the game. In the nightcap to Saturday's win, both Adrien Martin and Logan Martin put up four hits each. Maddux Edmonson got his first win of his collegiate career in the game.

Second Base – Throwing Strikes: Six Greyhound pitchers have post eight or more outings this season. Demitrius DiMatteo leads the program with a 3.47 ERA and has gone 36.1 innings on the mound. He holds a 1-1 record along with holding opponents to a .273 batting average. Cole Lancaster leads the program with 34 strikeouts. Charlie Pierson (28), Demitrius DiMatteo (26), Alexander Sanderson (25), and Micah Early (21) are the other arms with 20+ strikeouts this season. The longest outing for a Hound last week came from DiMatteo. He went 8.1 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits and four walks. Only one of those runs were earned in that time. Zach Raichel cleaned up the rest of the outing and picked up his first career save as he set down both batters he faced with just five pitches.

Third Base – Big Hits In Big Time: Adrien Martin went 8-for-12 over the weekend, including three hits in game one where he posted two singles and a double alongside a pair of RBI's. In the third contest of the series, Martin went 4-for-5 with three singles and a double along with four RBI's. Martin improved his batting average to .324. One of the more impressive outings came from Eiji Sawamura and Gabriel Watson in game two as they both had five hits. Watson put up two singles, one double, and two homers. Sawamura had three singles, a double, and an inside-the-park homer. Another impressive offensive stat from the weekend came in game three. The team leadoff the third inning with back-to-back-to-back homeruns. The trio of Cole Curtis, Gabriel Watson, and Jake Willerup accomplished the rare feat that last was done by ENMU in 2009.

Home – Top 20 Foe: St. Mary's comes into Portales ranked No. 18 in the nation. The Rattlers hold a 25-9 record, including a 12-3 record on the road. The only series the Rattlers have lost this season came in a series sweep against Angelo State in late-February. They are coming off a trio of wins over WT. StMU is led by three pitchers ranked in the top 10 in the conference in total strikeouts. They include Eric Tenery (44), Derek Maples (38), and Matthew Janecek (36). One of the top pitchers for StMU is Gabe Cook who has gone 35 innings allowing just 11 runs on 21 hits, eight walks, and one hit batter. He has given up seven doubles and three homers. Five regular starters hit above .300 for StMU. They are guided by Dillon Lopez who sports a .363 average with 41 hits. Lopez has snagged 36 RBI's and 30 runs. Another key player to keep an eye on is Garrett Brooks who boasts a .313 average with 40 hits, including 15 going for extra bases. He has walked 25 times in 2026. StMU is seeking their first 30+ win season since 2018.
