PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico baseball is set for the final home series of the season as they welcome Angelo State to the confines of Greyhound Baseball Field from April 17-19. Before the Greyhounds take on the Rams, please take a look at the Four Bases Preview:
First Base – Chaps Recap: Lubbock Christian earned three wins over Eastern New Mexico last week in the Hub City. The one game ENMU won came during the season opener last Friday. The Hounds put up a 6-5 win behind a strong pitching outing from
Demitrius DiMatteo. ENMU saw a multi-hit game from
Eiji Sawamura and
Adrien Martin to support the cause offensively. The Chaps led 3-0 after the first two innings of action, but ENMU found a way to score six-straight and hold off a late offensive push from LCU in the seventh frame. Eastern combined for 39 hits over the four games but only scored 24 runs. In two different games this weekend, ENMU had 12 hits. The Hounds lost both of those games and are now 6-3 in contests where they post 12 or more hits.
Second Base – A Special Homer: Gabriel Watson became just the 10th Greyhound to hit 10 homers in a single season. He is tied with four other Hounds at seventh all-time with 10 dingers hit in 2026. With eight games left, he can aim to top five records. Seven of his homeruns have come on the road this season. During his freshman season at Amarillo College, he hit seven homers. Back on March 28, Watson blasted three homers for ENMU during a doubleheader Saturday versus Oklahoma Christian. He also had a two-homer series against Sul Ross State earlier in the campaign. Watson currently holds a .321 batting average.
Third Base – Notable Rankings: Eastern New Mexico has several Greyhounds ranked among conference foes in various statistical categories.
Adrien Martin sits fifth in the LSC in walks.
Eiji Sawamura is third in the conference with 58 hits and eighth with 17 stolen bases.
Cole Curtis is seventh with three triples.
Gabriel Watson is second with 10 homers. A few Greyhound pitchers find themselves in the rankings.
Cole Lancaster is second with 11 games started and fifth with six wins.
Demitrius DiMatteo is fifth in the LSC with a 3.58 ERA. As a team, ENMU has five regular starters hitting above the .300 line. Sawamura is the top Hound with a .360 average and 42 starts.
Cole Curtis boasts a .338 batting average along with 47 hits.
Demitrius DiMatteo is second on the team with 50.1 innings thrown. He is limiting opponents to a .251 batting average this season.
Home – Ram-dem Notes: Angelo State comes into Portales with a 28-14 record, including a 15-4 mark in road games. They earned a 3-1 series win over West Texas A&M last weekend. They earned wins by scores of 5-3, 12-2, and 15-10. Their last series loss came to UT Dallas back in March. The Comets took three games from ASU. Six regular starters hit above the .300 mark. Payton Bush is putting a .360 batting average along with 50 hits, 37 RBI's, and 20 walks. Austin Beck continues to climb the ASU record books. He has started all 42 games while earning 52 hits and 14 doubles. Beck is 35-for-38 in stolen bases. Garrett Baumann has been consistent on the mound for Angelo State. He has 18 appearances with two starts. Baumann holds a 3.91 ERA and has throw 46 innings of work. Garrett Villa is 1-2 on the season through 22 appearances and 27.2 innings of action. He holds a 3.58 ERA and has given up 24 hits and 13 runs (11 earned). Villa limits opposing batters to a .253 average. ASU is currently fourth in LSC standings. One area where Eastern needs to keep an eye on for the Rams is that they rank first in the LSC with 128 stolen bases. One area where Angelo State is not ranked among the top half of the league is total hits (371). They are tenth in the LSC and 100th nationally in that stat.
