PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico baseball is set for a four-game series in the Hub City to face Lubbock Christian. Before the weekend, please take a look at the Four Bases Preview:
First Base: Top 25 Win – Eastern New Mexico opened last weekend's series with a win over No. 18 St. Mary's. The 9-5 result was their third win over a top 25 team this season.
Demitrius DiMatteo got the start on the mound for ENMU in the win and delivered a strong outing. After allowing three runs over the opening two frames, DiMatteo kept calm and held StMU to just one run in the fifth. He went seven innings and closed his book with four runs allowed (three earned) over three hits, two walks, and two hit batters. He threw 111 pitches. Offensively, the Hounds put up 10 hits.
Cole Curtis had a career-day with five hits and an RBI.
Ryan Weaver and
Logan Martin had multi-hit performances with two each. Both
Adrien Martin and
Nicholas Miller stayed patient at the plate with two walks each. ENMU limited the Rattlers to just seven hits. StMU committed four errors in the contest.
Second Base: Offensive Output – Five Eastern New Mexico student-athletes are hitting above the .300 mark this season.
Eiji Sawamura leads all Greyhounds with a .352 average and a team-best 51 hits. In the final two games of the series with StMU, he went 3-for-6.
Cole Curtis has been one of the hottest bats for ENMU this past week. He went 8-for-12 in three contest against the Rattlers, including a career-best five hits in the game one win. Curtis has a .341 batting average and boasts a .425 on base percentage.
Gabriel Watson is tied for tenth all-time at ENMU with nine homers in a single season. He was unable to play last week against St. Mary's due to an injury.
Third Base: Demolition Demo –
Demitrius DiMatteo is having a great second half to the 2026 slate. The senior from Las Cruces, N.M. leads the team and is sixth in the Lone Star Conference with a 3.53 ERA. No other pitcher for ENMU sits below seven ERA. DiMatteo holds a 2-1 mark, including a win last week. Through 10 appearances and three starts, he has gone 43.1 innings of work. He is limiting opponents to a .251 batting average. He is fourth in the LSC with a 1.34 walk/hit per innings pitched. In his last three outings, DiMatteo has gone 22.2 innings and has posted two-consecutive wins. He boasts 31 strikeouts in 2026.
Home: Bats Are Hot – Lubbock Christian leads the Lone Star Conference in doubles (81), home runs (44), and slugging percentage (.511). Roe Forrest is tied with ENMU's
Gabriel Watson with nine homers this year. On the mound,
Adrian Rubio leads the conference with three complete games. Rubio is second in the league with a 3.04 ERA. Another area where the Chaps hold an advantage is on the base paths. LCU is second in the league with 83 stolen bases. Teammates Jorge de los Santos and Kyle Lewis are tied for third in the LSC with 22 steals each. One stat where Lubbock Christian does not hold a distinct edge is in sacrifice bunts/flies. LCU is 12th in the conference in sacrifice bunts. The Chaps have won five of their last six games, including three-straight against West Texas A&M in Canyon. Their last series loss came against Texas A&M-Kingsville when they fell in the total series, 3-1, in Kingsville.
