KINGSVILLE, TEXAS — Brennen Pierson (RJr., Chandler, Ariz. / University of New Mexico) had a career high three RBIs for the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team (5-13, 1-6 LSC) in Sunday's 8-5 loss to Texas A&M University-Kingsville (14-7, 8-2 LSC). The Greyhounds also dropped the second game of the day's doubleheader, 4-2.
Cody Pope (Sr., Kingman, Ariz. / Williston State College) pitched 2.1 innings in the first game of the day and was saddled with the loss.
Nick Sarmiento (RJr., Saginaw, Mich. / Highland Community College) came in to relieve Pope, pitching 3.2 innings while giving up no runs and striking out one batter.
In the second game of the doubleheader
Mike Peters (Sr., Columbia, Miss. / Alcorn State University) pitched all six innings, giving up one earned run and seven hits while striking out two batters.
Pierson led the team over two games with his three RBIs while
Chris Sanders (Sr.
, Murrieta, Calif. / Palomar College) was the only Greyhound to record hits in both games on the day. Pierson recorded two hits as well in the first game of the day, but failed to record any hits in the second contest.
GAME ONEEastern fell behind early in the first contest of the day, giving up runs in the first three innings. Finding themselves trailing 8-0, the Greyhounds scored two runs in the fourth inning followed by three more runs in the seventh, but failed to overcome the deficit.
Peters came in as relief midway through the third inning and managed to hold the Javelinas scoreless through the remainder of the game.
The Greyhounds managed to match Kingsville from the plate, with Eastern recording 10 hits to the Javelinas 11. Kingsville managed to string their hits together, with the majority of the 11 hits coming in the first three innings compared to the Greyhounds who strung their hits out across the entirety of the contest.
GAME TWOThe second game was a closer affair, with both team's pitchers performing well from the mound.
Again Kingsville scored first, scoring one run in the first, second and third innings each, with their last run coming in the bottom of the sixth. The Greyhounds made a heroic effort in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs and leaving one man on base, but ultimately their offense fell just short.
Peters only recorded one earned run during the game, with the three other runs scored all coming as unearned runs. Only one run for either team was earned, with both of the Greyhounds two scores and three of the Javelinas coming off errors. Kingsville committed three errors during the game while Eastern had four.
The two teams will conclude their series Monday at 12:00 p.m. (MST). The Greyhounds will then travel to San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday to play a nonconference game against St. Mary's University-Texas before heading back to Portales, N.M., for a home stand against Cameron University.
