PORTALES, N.M. — Chris Sanders (Sr., Murrieta, Calif. / Palomar College) recorded six hits and four RBIs during Eastern New Mexico University baseball team's doubleheader losses to Texas A&M University-Kingsville Saturday, leading the team in both categories.
The Greyhounds (14-25, 9-17 LSC) had a tough first game loss 5-4 to the Javelinas (26-15, 20-8 LSC) that was followed by a 22-5 loss in the second contest of the day. TAMUK showed why they are currently sitting atop the Lone Star Conference standings, recording 28 hits and 24 RBIs on the day.
James Gray (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla. / East Carolina University) pitched seven innings in the first game, fanning seven batters and only giving up one run. Costly fielding errors combined with a wild pitch allowed four unearned runs to score for the Javelinas and despite a late game comeback from ENMU, TAMUK held on to win by one run.
The second game saw an overpowering Javelinas team score run after run, putting up a 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning to seal the deal. The Greyhounds managed to cut the deficit to only four runs heading into the fourth with a five run inning of their own in the third, but the big fourth out of TAMUK proved to be too difficult to overcome.
Sanders recorded his first homerun of the season in the second contest, driving in one run as part of ENMU's big third inning of scoring.
Nick Sarmiento (R-Jr., Saginaw, Mich. / Highland Community College) came in as relief for one inning and managed to shutout the Javelinas for one inning.
Daniel Schiller (So., Port Charlotte, Fla. / Tallahassee Community College) proceeded to follow suite with a shutout inning as well.
The Greyhounds will travel to Cameron University next week and keep their playoff hopes alive. ENMU is currently trailing Tarleton State University by two games, but that could change depending on the outcome of the Tarleton vs. Cameron series occurring today.
