Ward Hits Seventh Homerun of the Season in Doubleheader Loss to Cameron

Saturday, April 25, 2015

LAWTON, OKLA. — The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Cameron University Saturday, losing 4-2 and 9-7.

The Greyhounds (14-27, 9-19 LSC) are still trying to fight for a postseason berth, but the two loses to the Aggies (19-25, 11-20 LSC) puts ENMU behind Cameron in the Lone State Conference standings.  The two teams now occupy the fifth and sixth spots in the conference standing, respectively.

Chris Sander (Sr., Murrieta, Calif. / Palomar College) was the lone Greyhound to record multiple hits in the first contest, going 2-for-3 and recording the team's lone RBI.  James Gray (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla. / East Carolina University) was named the starter, pitching all six innings, giving up only two earned runs and striking out five batters.

In the second contest Steven Moore (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz. / Paradise Valley College) led the team from the batter's box, recording three hits and two RBIs.  Unlike the first contest, this game saw the Greyhounds have five players with multiple hits, recording 14 hits total for the team.

Daniel Ward (So., Cleveland, Ohio / Clovis Community College) had the lone homerun of the day for ENMU, putting him at seven on the season and leading the team in deep shots.  Sanders recorded a double, giving him a team-leading 13 doubles on the season.

Cody Pope (Sr., Kingman, Ariz. / Williston State College) couldn't manage to pull his win/loss record up to 6-3 on the day, pitching 4.1 innings with five strikeouts and five earned runs.

ENMU fell behind early in the first contest, trailing 3-0 before scoring in the top of the fourth inning.  The second contest played much differently, with the Greyhounds jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
The Greyhounds would hold a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but a big four run inning from the Aggies would spell disaster for the team.  In the ninth inning ENMU's leadoff man reached base on an error, but a ground ball to the Cameron shortstop would turn into a quick double play.

The Greyhounds will return to the field tomorrow to try and get one game back from the Aggies.  The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 12:00 p.m. (MST).  When the Greyhounds return they will travel to University of the Southwest on Tuesday for a single game before playing their final regular season series against Angelo State over the weekend in Angelo, Texas.
