PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team will be looking to make it three in a row on Tuesday afternoon against Arkansas Tech in neutral site action against Arkansas Tech in Plano, Texas.
The Hounds will meet the Wonderboys on the campus of Collin County Community College for just the third meeting in the history of the two programs and will look to add a win against a nationally respected program to their resume. Eastern moved to 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play last weekend with wins over MSU Texas and Cameron, showcasing their best performances of basketball so far in this young season.
ALL YOU NEED IS A LITTLE BIT OF HOME
Eastern New Mexico flourished this past weekend in their first action on the court inside Greyhound Arena, scoring 80 points or more in back-to-back conference games for just the third time in the
Tres Segler era. The Hounds shot 46.8 percent (51-of-109) from the field over the course of the two games and converted on 19-of-44 attempts (43.2 percent) from behind the three-point line.
Thursday night's 85-73 win over MSU Texas was just the second time Eastern New Mexico has defeated the Mustangs since 2006. Sophomore
Devin Pullum dropped 20 points for a season high and helped spark a dominant second-half performance for the Greyhounds that saw Eastern put together a 9-3 run over the course of the final two minutes of the game.
That solid second half put to rest the concern over the team's ability to close out games as they had struggled mightily to put points on the board in the second half of games prior to Lone Star Conference play.
However, the second half scoring proved to weigh very little in Saturday's 86-72 win over Cameron as the Hounds finished off the first half with a 19-3 run over the final 10 minutes of play, cementing a 41-25 halftime advantage. Cameron never managed to cut the deficit down to single digits as four Greyhounds reached double-digit scoring numbers.
Senior
Nick Brown led the way with 19 points, while senior
Maurice Coleman got to the free-throw line early and often on his way to 10-of-11 free throw makes and 17 points.
SCOUTING THE WONDERBOYS
Hailing from the Great American Conference, Arkansas Tech has proven to be one of the nation's most reliable scoring units over the course of the past few seasons. The Wonderboys currently rank second in the GAC and 44
th nationally with an offense that averages 85.3 points per game.
Sophomore R.J. Glasper, a transfer from the University of Arkansas, leads the offensive attack for Arkansas Tech with an average of 24.0 points per game and is coming off of a weekend in which he totaled 25 and 30 points in the two conference games for the Wonderboys. The scoring options run much deeper than just Glasper however, as seniors Alex Brown and Will Adler both average double-digit scoring marks.
Tech dropped their first two conference games over the weekend by single-digit points to Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State to move their overall record to 2-4. The Wonderboys have wins over Minnesota Crookston and William Jewell, but struggled against their other two non-conference foes for the season.
A TRIO OF TESTERS
The traditional break between the first weekend of conference games and the rest of the conference schedule is often seen as the time when the full arsenal of a team's potential is unleashed. With the early season jitters and rotational experiments hopefully solved, Eastern New Mexico will have three quality opponents throughout the aforementioned break to continue their solid play.
Following Tuesday's game the Hounds will have a nice break in action before heading to Denver, Colo. on Dec. 19 to take on their first of two regional games in Regis University. Regis has been a traditional contender in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and currently sports a record of 4-2.
The Hounds will then take on a squad from the other conference that makes up the South Central Region in the Heartland's Oklahoma Christian, who currently have a record of 3-4. Wins over these three non-conference foes would be huge not just from the momentum side of the equation, but also from a regional rankings standpoint.
READY, SET, PULL
As mentioned early,
Devin Pullum has been a strong offensive influence on the squad coming off the bench all season, but converted on some timely buckets throughout each game this past weekend. The Little Elm, Texas native scored 20 and 13 points in the two wins over MSU Texas and Cameron while also leading the team with nine total assists.
