PORTALES, N.M. - Eastern New Mexico University Track and Field is set to compete at the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26. In all, the Greyhounds will have four individuals and a relay team compete with the hopes of bringing home some hardware.
Leading the way for ENMU is sprinter
Marcus Parker. The sophomore is sitting in the top three in both the 100m dash and 200m dash entering the national meet. He competes in the 100m dash prelims first on Thursday, May 24 at 4:10 p.m. His time of 10.17 seconds is the third fastest in the nation behind only NaRon Rollins (10.09) of Pittsburg State and Roberto Smith (10.16) of Lincoln (Mo.). The 100m dash will have three prelim heats, with Parker running in heat two out of lane three.
Parker will compete in the 200m dash prelims on Friday, May 25 at 3:35 p.m. He has the nation's top time entering the event at 20.43. Out of the 24 athletes competing, Parker is one of 13 competitors that has run the 200 in under 21 seconds. The 200 will also be consisted of three heats and parker will run in heat two out of lane three. Should Parker advance to the finals for both events, he will run again on Saturday, May 26. The 100m dash finals will be at 2:45 p.m., while the 200m dash finals will be at 3:50 p.m.
Joining Parker on the men's side is
Kenneth Lloyd. The senior is the only Greyhound competing in a field event as he will look to become an All-American in the high jump. He enters nationals ranked sixth in the nation with a height of 2.14m (7-0.25). Lloyd will take on the vertical bar on Friday with the event set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
The Greyhound women will be represented in three events, all of which will be on the track. Individual competitors will be
Kandice Miles and
Danee Bustos in the 200m dash. The duo will compete in the prelims on Friday at 3:50 p.m. Entering the national meet, Miles is seeded 13th with a time of 24.05, while Bustos is seeded 21st with a time of 24.22. Of the three heats, both competitors are seeded in heat one. Miles will run in lane four, while Bustos will run in lane six. If either competitor makes the finals they will run on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The ENMUÂ women will also have their 4x100m relay team on track at the national championships. The quartet of runners will consist of Miles Bustos,
Lateria Slaughter, and
Maijah Mathis. The group is ranked seventh overall of the 14 team field with a time of 45.93. There are two heats for the event and the Greyhound women will run in heat two out of lane two. If the women make it out of the prelims, they will have a day off before returning to the track for the finals of the 4x100Â on Saturday, with the event starting at 1:35 p.m.
The NCAA-II Outdoor National Championships are in Charlotte, N.C. at the Irwin Belk Complex and Johnson C. Smith University will serve as the host of the championships.
