PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico track and field team is ready to compete at the Ross Black Invitational hosted by New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, N.M. this weekend.
Competing in the meet for the second year in a row, the Hounds will open the Ross Black Invite on Friday afternoon starting at 4 p.m. before returning for the final day of the event on Saturday with a 10 a.m. start time.
The Hounds are coming off a strong performance at the West Texas A&M Classic & Multi last week, breaking five school records and setting three NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks.
Kandice Miles set the sixth-fastest time in Division II in the 200-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 23.95 while breaking her own ENMU program record.
In the 100-meter dash, Maijah Mathis broke her own ENMU record as well with a time of 11.90, setting an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with the 26th best time in Division II.
The Hounds also had a pair of freshman break program records as Jessica Campbell set the ENMU record in the heptathlon with a score of 4107, becoming the first Greyhound to ever break the 4000-point barrier in the event. Kayla Stephens was the other record-breaking freshman as her 3.35-meter vault broke Hannah Cabledue's record of 3.28-meters set in last year's Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships.
The last program record breaking performance to happen last week occurred in the men's 4x400-meter relay event as Brandon Chavez, Andrew Villegas, Travonne Armstead, and Ivar Moinat eclipsed their own record with a time of 3:15.48, surpassing the previous best of 3:16.34 set during the 2017 season.
Moinat was the third Greyhound to set an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 800-meter run, as his time of 1:51.03 set a personal best in the outdoor 800-meter event and improved upon his second-best mark in the ENMU record book. After being converted down to 1:50.66 due to elevation, Moinat's mark currently ranks as the fifth-best in Division II.
