PORTALES, NM - The Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team officially opens the 2021-22 season with contests against Fort Lewis College and New Mexico Highlands University this weekend. The Greyhounds will face the Skyhawks on Saturday, November 13 at 1 p.m. before taking on the Cowboys on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at The Pit on the campus of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. 

LAST TIME OUT

• The Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team traveled to the University of Arizona on Monday, Nov. 1 for an exhibition. The Greyhounds were handed a 96-50 loss by the Wildcats.
• Eastern's leading scorer was James Jordan with 13 points (5-12 FG, 3-7 3PT).
• Kentrell Pullian added eight points, while Jared Perry tallied six.
• Defensively, Jose Serrano led the team on the boards with seven rebounds. Pullian was close behind with five.
• Yosnier Cobas finished the contest with two steals.

NEW LEADER AT THE HELM

• Brent Owen was named the 14th head coach in program history in May 2020. While he is heading into his second season at Eastern, this will be the first on the bench since the 2020-21 season was unfortunately canceled for the Hounds.
• Prior to joining the Greyhounds, Owen was an assistant coach at the University of Southern Indiana for nine years.

LAST SEASON

• The Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team returns to the court after having to sit out the 2020-21 season due to New Mexico COVID-19 restrictions.
• ENMU finished the 2019-20 season with an overall record of 8-19 and a 8-14 mark in Lone Star Conference play.
• The Hounds return five student-athletes who saw action in 2019-20. Those five are Jose Serrano, Garrick Sherrod, Marvin Mapaga, Yosnier Cobas, and Isaac Maldonado. The rest of the 2021-22 squad is a mixture of players who came to Eastern in either 2020-21 or are new this year and have yet to make their official debut.
• In 2019-20, the Greyhounds averaged 74 points per game, 35.4 rebounds per game, 11.3 assists per game, 6.9 steals per game, and 3.0 blocks per game.
• Of the returners for Eastern, Jose Serrano averaged 10.6 points per game and played 19.1 minutes per game. Defensively, Yosnier Cobas led the 2019-20 team in rebounds with 5.1 per game.

LSC PRESEASON POLL

• The LSC recently released the 2021-22 Preseason Poll. The Greyhounds were picked to finish 14th out of 17 teams. In addition to the poll, the Preseason Player of the Year was also selected and Lubbock Christian's Parker Hicks won the award.
