PORTALES, N.M. – The Eastern New Mexico track and field program begins the 2021 outdoor season at the West Texas A&M Spring Break Classic on Friday, March 19. Last year's outdoor season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Greyhounds return several student-athletes who performed well in the 2020 indoor season before the shutdown, including
Mercy Rotich and
Neri Getraide.
At the 2020 Indoor Lone Star Conference Championships, Rotich earned gold in the 3000-meter with a time of 10:21.25. She also placed first and broke the LSC All-Time and LSC Meet records in the 5000-meter with a time of 17:16.52. Â Getraide earned a gold in the 800-meter finishing with time of 2:16.65.
Both Rotich and Getraide were named First Team-All LSC for their efforts. Overall, the women's team took 5
th place out of 12 teams at the 2020 Indoor LSC Championships and will look to build upon that success this season.
The men's team finished 8
th out of 11 teams at last year's Indoor LSC Championships and return three student-athletes in
Toby Kirk,
Alex Aguirre, and
Jon Fuentes.
