ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico indoor track and field competed at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico Saturday.
"This weekend was another building block for us," said head coach
Joshua Harden after the meet. "We ran against some of the best programs in the country so we definitely were able to see the character and poise from our athletes."
Several top runners and field athletes from DI and DII programs participated in the meet.
In his first race as a Greyhound,
Timothy Frederick broke the school record in the 400m running in 48.62 seconds. His time put him in the top spot among unseeded runners in the competition. The previous top time was set last year at the 2022 LSC Indoor Championships by
Japhet Toroitich with a 48.69.
"Timothy was able to open for us with a great result," said Harden on the junior's race. "We are expecting more highlight moments from him as we continue into the season."
Joining Frederick in the 400m race was
Jude Murray who completed the sprint in 52.25 seconds.
Tamia Smith came just shy from breaking her record in the shot put with a throw of 13.33m (43' 8.75") on her second attempt of the day. She also posted a 12.56m (41' 2") toss in the weight throw which was good for seventh among eleven competitors from DII programs.
Kennedy Ulmer also competed in the shot put for ENMU as she threw her first attempt 11.09m (36' 4.5").
On the men's side, freshman
Noe Ybaben-Burciaga landed a successful throw in the shot put hitting the mark of 12.57m good for sixth out of ten participants from DII schools. He also had a successful toss of 11.05m (36' 3") in the weight throw.
Three Hounds competed in the women's 400m. The finishers include
Mahault Lebrun (1:01.77),
Meghan Rodriguez 400m (1:03.20), and
Kiara Cox (1:05.47).
Ashlynn Evans took fifth out of nine jumpers from DII schools in the long jump going 4.83m (15' 10.25"). She also competed in the triple jump finishing in sixth out of eight competitors from DII programs with a 10.5m (34' 5.5") jump.

"We are looking forward to this upcoming weekend to continue to put more of the pieces together against another list of competitive schools," said Harden on the next competition.
ENMU will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at the UNM Team Open. Races will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
