PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball is back on the road for a trip to No. 21 Angelo State and UT Permian Basin after a pair of wins this weekend.
Before the Greyhounds tip off Thursday night, please take a look at the Starting Five:
1.) No Home Like Our Home: ENMU, Angelo State, and West Texas A&M are the three schools in the LSC who are undefeated at home in 2022-23. With a 9-0 record at Greyhound Arena, including a ten-game win streak dating back to last season, the Hounds are proving why it is tough for teams to win in Portales. On Thursday, Eastern beat Texas A&M International, 56-51, and followed that with a 73-65 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville to close out the weekend.Â
2.) All Grand: Saturday's victory is Eastern New Mexico's 1000th in program history. The moment highlights several key wins in ENMU history, including an NAIA championship in 1969 and several conference championships (tournament and regular season). From the first win in 1934 all the way to 2023 with the Greyhounds earning their milestone victory, all of them hold special memories.Â
3.) Jose Jose Jose: The Lone Star Conference recognized
Jose Murillo as the league's defensive player of the week after his stellar performances against the Dustdevils and Javelinas. Between the two games he averaged 7.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per contest. He also played a career-high 32 minutes against TAMUK Saturday afternoon. The weekly honor is the third for a Hound this year.
Greg Johnson earned the offensive award a few weeks back when the Hounds played the Rams and Falcons and
Errol White was named defensive player of the week before the holiday break.Â
4.) Rematch to Watch: For those familiar with LSC basketball, they might know that Angelo State's only loss in conference action came at the hands of ENMU. The two programs met on Jan. 1 to open the new year and the Hounds got the best of the Rams with an 80-70 victory.
Greg Johnson paced the Eastern offensive attack with 20 points and
Jahcoree Ealy added 18 points off the bench.
Eze Dike also hit a nice stride with 15 points and four assists over the game. Angelo State had four players in double figures led by Willie Guy with 18 points, but it was not enough to get past ENMU in the first matchup of the season.Â
5.) Looking For Another: Back on Dec. 30, Eastern pushed past the Falcons for an 84-75 win.
Greg Johnson ignited the Hounds with 24 points (5-6 3FG) and
Jahcoree Ealy proved to be vital off the bench with 17 points.
Eze Dike joined his teammates in double figures with 14 points and
Malique Oates scored a career-high ten points, which he has since tied, but has not been able to eclipse. The Greyhounds outscored UTPB, 32-6, off the bench which proved to be a big difference maker in the game.
