PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico softball is coming off a series win against Western New Mexico and heads to Austin, Texas for three games against St. Edward's Saturday and Sunday.
Before first pitch, please take a look at the Four Bases:
First Base – All The Runs: Eastern New Mexico scored 30 runs against Western New Mexico over three games this week. They took the first contest by way of run-rule, 8-0. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mustangs earned an 8-7 win in eight innings. On Wednesday, ENMU had an offensive showcase on a windy day in Portales as they won 15-2 in five innings.
Second Base – Hitting's Our Thing: When looking at the conference-wide statistics, one can see that the top-three names for individual hits belong to the Greyhounds.
Alondra Vasquez and
Azalea Martinez both have 23 hits to lead the Lone Star Conference. Both also lead the team in RBI's with 22 each. Martinez has a conference-best nine doubles and two triples. Vasquez is the top power-bat as she has four homers early in the season.
Ashley Nickerson is third in total hits among conference players with 22 on the year. The freshman has two homers and six doubles along with a .449 batting average.
Third Base – Mikenzey Making Moves: Senior
Mikenzey Patterson had a solid series against Western New Mexico. The rightfielder scored six runs and had five hits, including two triples. She also picked up two more steals to bring her season total to six. Over 35 at-bats, Patterson has only struckout once in 2023. She comes into this weekend with a .429 batting average.
Home – Hilltoppers History: St. Edward's is 15-4 all-time against Eastern New Mexico. The Hounds are 1-3 when playing SEU in Austin, including the lone victory coming in the last matchup between the two programs. On March 27, 2022, the Hounds beat the home squad 3-2. In the game, four current Hounds had hits and
Brook Leger came in relief and threw three innings and only allowed two hits while striking out one batter. Both of SEU's top arms pitched in the game – Cadie Currie and Renna Toomey.
