PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico softball is back in action at the West Texas A&M Invitational to face three RMAC opponents over five games.
Before the Hounds head to Canyon for the multiday event, please take a look at the Four Bases:
First Base – Split Decisions: ENMU beat Chadron State Wednesday afternoon, 12-0, in five innings. The dominant victory included eleven runs in the fourth inning.
Alondra Vasquez hit her first homerun of the season on a lining shot towards centerfield.
Azalea Martinez had a great game at the plate as she reached four times with two singles, walk, and a double. In the second matchup, CSC escaped with a 7-6 win dropping Eastern's record to 4-3 early in the 2023 campaign.
Second Base - Gress Is Great: Leftfielder
Jennifer Gress is batting well over the first seven games of the season. The sophomore from Houston, Texas is in the top-three among Hounds hitters in batting average (.391), on-base percentage (.548), hits (9), and runs (10). She is also one of twelve players with a perfect fielding percentage to begin the season. In two games against Chadron State, she walked four times, hit two doubles, added a single, and scored four runs.
Third Base - Among The Competition: Eastern New Mexico holds the lead among NCAA DII softball programs with 39 walks. The team also ranks first in the LSC in hits (62), shutouts (2), and runs (50). The Hounds are second among conference programs in on-base percentage (.453) and doubles (17). Junior
Alondra Vasquez is tied with the top mark among conference players with ten RBI's.
Home – Busy Weekend: Three RMAC teams will play the Greyhounds this weekend. New Mexico Highlands is slated for matchups on Friday and Saturday, Fort Lewis will play a pair of games Friday and Sunday, and Colorado Mesa will matchup with Eastern on Saturday. NMHU is 3-1 to begin the 2023 season as they hold wins over LSC programs – Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin. Fort Lewis played in the same tournament as the Cowboys last week and went 2-2 with wins against WNMU and UTPB as well. Colorado Mesa traveled to California for a tough slate of games where they finished 2-3. They opened the season with wins over Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay. The Mavericks are coming off a season where they went 45-9 and 35-3 in conference action. ENMU played all three teams in 2022 going a combined 5-1. The only loss came to CMU.
