SB Four Bases: Texas A&M International

Greyhounds back at home for a three-game series against Texas A&M International

PORTALES, N.M. – After a three-game series against St. Edward's, Eastern New Mexico softball is looking to get back to winning ways as they host Texas A&M International at Greyhound Softball Field Friday and Saturday. Before the two teams clash, please take a look at the Four Bases:

First Base – Rough Results: ENMU dropped three games to the Hilltoppers after winning the previous two conference series to begin league play in 2023. Both SEU and ENMU battled in all three games with the pitcher's proving to be a major difference in the contests. Brook Leger pitched 15.1 innings over two games, but ended up on the losing end of both after the Greyhounds had five errors defensively in the contests she threw in. Overall, it was a difficult weekend offensively and St. Edward's took advantage of the offensive woes for the Hounds. The results went 3-0 (game one), 8-2 (game 2), and 2-1 in ten innings (game three) in favor of the Hilltoppers.

Second Base – Trending Upwards: The Greyhounds are in the top three in several statistical categories compared to other teams in the Lone Star Conference. The program is second in on-base percentage (.418), hits (176), runs (127), and runs batted in (116). Eastern is also third with a .473 slugging percentage. Azalea Martinez continues to have an excellent season as she is tied for first in the league with 26 hits and tied for second with teammate Alondra Vasquez with 22 RBI's. Brook Leger continues to hold significant success in the circle as she has 57 strikeouts and an 8-3 record.

Third Base – Power at the Plate: Seven different players have ten or more hits for the Hounds so far this year. The list includes Azalea Martinez (26), Ashley Nickerson (24), Alondra Vasquez (23), Mikenzey Patterson (16), Jokaira Paredes (16), Jennifer Gress (14), and Valeria Contreras (11). In total, 20 Greyhounds have at least one hit. Seven Hounds have combined for 14 homeruns, including four coming off the bat of Vasquez.

Home – Dust Storm Danger: With the Dustdevils coming into Portales for the three-game series, both teams are looking to find some signs of success after both programs have not had favorable moments in their last two series in LSC play. The Hounds are 2-4 in their last six games while TAMIU is 1-5 in its last six contests. Overall, Texas A&M International leads the series history against Eastern New Mexico, 9-1. The Greyhounds did pull off a 4-1 victory against the visitors from Laredo, Texas in 2022. Leger pitched in the contest and only gave up three hits and one run in seven innings of work. Current Hound Mikenzey Patterson scored a run and had a base hit in the win.
